My barefoot K2 at 5 watts and my 62' attic doublet with the SG-237
autocoupler produced 43 countries, 25 states, and six Canadian provinces for me. I operated on 80, 40, 20, and 15. The K2 performed flawlessly. K2 #5957 with NB, DSP and amp also worked great. Ok, it's not a K3 or
some such rig. Not saying it is. However, I worked everything I heard, hunting and pouncing my way to over 550 contacts and over 500K points [claimed]. I had a "new" DSP unit that replaced an "old" one [long story], and it was a charm. I like getting more out of less, so the K2 fits my style. That said, it's a great little rig. If you want to build one - a great ham radio experience - the resulting radio will hold its own in just about any situation. The K3 and other "big" rigs no doubt do better, but, I doubt that they do so very much better as to make the K2 obsolete. If a ham decides to go the K2 route he/she won't be disappointed. Satisfied owner of a "mature" product. ...robert On 11/29/2010 20:36, stan levandowski wrote: > My barefoot K2 at 5 watts and my 62' attic doublet with the SG-237 > autocoupler produced 43 countries, 25 states, and six Canadian provinces > for me. Stan,
I can tell you that I envy you quite a bit ! I was operating at OZ5E as M2 HP station with two Yaesu FT-1000 MP Mark Five's, with all of Inrad's complete inventory of filters added, stubs here, there and everywhere, and two Acom 1010's on the back punching out a full legal limit. Even if we did very well and broke the Danish records (which we did) on CQWW CW points, I missed to try out the K2's receiver and sweet sound on CW, but most of all, I missed it's unparallel in-band blocking when the pile-ups were getting thick and the larger stations from eastern Europe was working as close as 300 Hz on my side most of the time - this really becomes difficult on the FT-1000, even with all the post-production filters one could possibly add. They have so much trouble coping with the large-signal conditions of our own harmonics in the shack from the other running station that they suffer from inter-modulation birdies, bleeps, and blops. I am looking forward to the day where I can finally try out a pair of K2's or K3's in a M2 HP contesting setup on CQWW or similar high-activity CW contest. I get so exited wanting to test for real on real harsh conditions on an over-crowded 40m band how the crystal filters add to the joy of the Elecraft receiver. 73' Brian OZ2BRN K2 # 6936 Den 29-11-2010 21:36, stan levandowski skrev: > My barefoot K2 at 5 watts and my 62' attic doublet with the SG-237 > autocoupler produced 43 countries, 25 states, and six Canadian provinces > for me. Pure joy! I was search & pouncing up and down the dial with my K2 set up as follows:
Attenuator: ON AGC: OFF XFIL: 100 Hz AFIL: I think it's 100 Hz as well ...and riding the RF Gain control very carefully, keeping it just high enough to hear my prey clearly. It was unsettling how quiet the band sounded. You'd work a guy and move on until someone else popped up out of the silence. You couldn't tell if the band had died or what, until you looked at your log and realized the last guy you worked was just several tens of Hz from the guy you're about to call. Wow! You have to go to a wide filter once in a while for a reality check...just to appreciate how good you have it! I think I'll order an AF-1 filter kit and my K2 will be unbeatable! I'll skip the K3 and save up for a K4! 73, Ken Alexander VE3HLS ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I just got off the phone with Elecraft a couple hours ago. I, too, ordered the AF-1 today and now I'm about to email that guy who sells the plastic boxes for it. You described exactly what I felt during the contest. I had the best time of my life this weekend. For the record, did you operate with 100 watts? 73 Stan Levandowski WB2LQF HF QRP CW -- Doing more with less for over 50 years! Hi Stan,
Yes, I was running 100 watts during the contest. If I'm going to sit in front of my radio all weekend then I want LOTS of QSOs! So, I turn up the power. I was single band on 20m all weekend (I like being able to get a good night's sleep!). I'm using a vertical and worked 290 stations in 87 countries and 25 zones. I would have liked more QSOs but I napped through some critical periods on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. I'm very pleased with my country and zone totals though. I'll be ordering my AF-1 and cabinet next week. Hope we can compare notes when they're built! 73 - Ken VE3HLS --- On Tue, 11/30/10, stan levandowski <[hidden email]> wrote: > From: stan levandowski <[hidden email]> > Subject: RE: [Elecraft] My K2 in CQWW CW > To: [hidden email] > Cc: [hidden email] > Date: Tuesday, November 30, 2010, 8:18 PM > On Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 7:38 PM, Ken > Alexander wrote: > > > Pure joy!
