I am building my second K2. I bought an XG1 after the first one was complete
so did not use it on the other build until after it was running. I am to the point in the process where I just did my first alignment step. Everything was perfect and S meter calibrated fine. There is a note that says if you have the XG1, you can use it to get your 50mv S9 signal at this point. They do not give you much more detail than that. So I attached it to the BNC at the back and nothing. Looking over the schematic It looke like W1 might have to be installed. I did not spend much time looking but that seemed to be the case. So, should you be able to use the BNC and XG1 and get a signal? Seems like the RF board is not far enough along to do that yet. 73, Rich kd0zv _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Rich,
Yes, W1 must be installed, and you must tune the K2 to the frequency of the XG1. So it is really only good for the alignment of 40 meters (although it may prove usable on the harmonics of 7040 kHz) and for setting the S-meter. Usually band noise is usually sufficient to tune the bandpass filters, or use a wideband noise generator - that way the bandpass filter peaking is not dependent on tuning the K2 to a specific frequency within the band being aligned. 73, Don W3FPR ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rich McCabe" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, August 21, 2004 5:42 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K2 First Alignment. Very perceptive!!! Installation of jumper W1 doesn't occur until page 56 in the Rev F manual, while mention of using the XG1 occurs on page 47. Of course, you are correct! You'll have to have a patent RF path in order to obtain much of a signal from the XG1... though there might be a little signal sneak thru, installing jumper W1 is certainly the BEST way to ensure that you can hear something... heheh! IN FACT... I'm not certain it'd even matter IF YOU DID install W1 at the point you're presently at anyway... you still can't receive on 40M!!! NO band-specific components have been installed yet, so there'd be no way to receive the 7040kHz signal from the XG1 regardless...! I'd suggest you bide your time until page 64 in the (Rev F) manual.. just before you resume Assembly (Part III). THEN, you can perform S-meter calibration using the XG1. 73, Tom Hammond N0SS _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Thanks for the comments guys. I tried W1 and nobodys home :)
So think I will wait until later to try that. Guess Elecraft need to make a slight manual change. Rich, check the errata. That step has been moved from page 47 to page 64 in
the manual. Rich:
I find the XG1 perfect for tuning the S meter and the wideband noise generator perfect for tuning filters for the rest of the bands.
