K2. How to do PSK and RTTY . VOX issues.

Tom Arntzen
Hi everyone.
Thaught I would share this with those of you who is interessed in digimode.

Abt. 2 weeks ago there was sort of a poll on the vox in the K2.
Well the majority of us like to ptt on ssb , but the vox is very handy in digimode.

First of all I have centered rttyfilters around 1000hz with fl1 op1 as it has to be for tx(same as for SSB) , fl2 bw 1000 , fl3 bw 700 and fl4 bw 350hz using spectrogram.

I set ssbA to 1 and ssbC to 1.

I run direct line from pc soundcard to mic input on K2 (don't forget to put a capasitor in line to prevent mic biasvoltage into the pc. between 2,2uF- 10uF is good).
I run LF directly from speakerjack on the K2 into line in on PC with an xtra plug to connect headphones so I can also hear what I see on waterfall.
Fineadjust with K2's AF GAIN.

Activate VOX on K2 and put ur fsk software into tx.
Adjust soundcard outout to the point where vox is trigging and holding K2 in tx.
Set fsk software into rx and check that the K2 is going in rx as well.

The line in has to be muted so K2 AF does not return to mic via PC.

This workes very well for me and the setup act as there was hardware keying.
For this the vox in the K2 works superb. I don't think it's clumsy at all.

Also with rit in 0,6 setting there would not be a problem with 10-30 hz offset between rx/tx freq. in the K2.
Close enough anyway.

This is the easy way to digimode with the K2.

CU on digimode.

Tom and all,

This method is good technically, BUT...

Since most digital mode software also has provision for PTT (yes, it
requires building a simple interface), I would never advocate the use of VOX
for digital modes except perhaps in an emergency - it is too easy to forget
to turn off the 'Windows' sounds and the noises made by other programs which
will cause 'playing music' on the ham bands!!!  Just not a legal thing to do
for amateur radio here in the US.  Even if one does not have the PTT
interface, I consider it better to use manual changeover than to transmit
prohibited emissions.

I downloaded a patch to my system from Red Hat and have never had a
problem with unsolicited Windows sounds since...or any unsolicited
sounds for that matter ;-)  It works great with my PSK-20 which has
built-in vox.

...but an off/on switch on the vox interface is also a good idea.

Leigh.
