That which sets these radios apart is their relative immunity to blocking and IMD. That's a pleasure! Their clean transmitting signal is a matter of pride for the operator.
A few suggestions to the relatively less experienced contesters;
* compare yourself only to yourself and have fun. Even the last place finisher in a marathon has a smile on their face!
* I can not speak for everyone else, but I can copy 60 wpm, and most QSO's are going to occur above 28 wpm. Practice!
* I never, ever, reduce the passband below about 900 cycles. I want to hear what's going on all around me, and i more or less copy all of them at once
* If the radio isn't being jammed by IMD/blocking I won't have any trouble copying both signals that are 50 cycles apart. I am going to answer the caller who finishes first.
* dipoles are plenty in the sweepstakes, but high is nice
I just play any more, after 50 years of contesting, but sure had a good time!
