[K2] KAT100 + KPA100 power supply in EC2

oe9fwv

I have built the KAT100 and KPA100 into a custom EC2 housing and it is working very well,
there is only one little "problem" in the setting which I do not like. The combo needs two power
supply cables, one for the high current into the KPA100 (Anderson connectors) and one for the
KAT100 (round plug like in the K2). I'd like to power the unit with only one power cable into the
AP connector. Did anybody already find an elegant solution for this? I'd prefer to have the
necessary cables inside the EC2 not a Y-cable outside.

  Werner,

Do you have the header for the AUX DC cable from the KPA100 installed in
your KAT100?  In other words, do you have the KAT100-2?
If so, there is no need for the power cable to the KAT100, it will be
powered from the cable to the KPA100.

yes Don, you are right! Everything works like you, Bill and Gary described.
I don't know what I did wrong before. I have the 12V header installed, maybe I had forgotten to
connect the AUX/IO cable or whatever. I'll change my powercable now.

btw, the EC2 project is making progress. The rear panel is finished, the opening for the
loudspeaker is still missing. This will be the toughest part of all. The Aluminium material of the
EC2 is of low quality, it is not possible to make my first draft with the milling machine. We will
produce something different. I'll send you a picture in a private mail.

  Werner,

From prior photos that I have seen, you have great milling
capabilities, but the KPA100 speaker is exposed through the heatsink (no
need for any milling).  The only problem for using the KPA100 speaker is
that you have to run a separate cable for the speaker (and provide an
input to the EC2).  Most just ignore the KPA100 speaker and use the
speaker in the K2 QRP cover.

OTOH, if you want a front firing speaker, and are willing to use another
EC2 enclosure, the SP2 speaker project (that never made production) is
detailed on the Elecraft website.
