The battery in my K2, KBT2 does not charge any more.
With 13,5 volts at J3 socket, I measure this same 13,5 v on the terminals of the battery, but it does not charge. The battery is 6 years old. Could it be kaput? ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Those gel cell batteries do have a lifetime, and I would think 6 years
of life for one is good. Time for a new one. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/3/2011 12:32 PM, Yves Dussault wrote: > The battery in my K2, KBT2 does not charge any more. > With 13,5 volts at J3 socket, I measure this same 13,5 v on the > terminals of the battery, but it does not charge. > The battery is 6 years old. If you got six years out of a lead acid battery, you are doing good. Batteries Plus has a replacement with slightly less capacity for just over $19. It is 2.2AH rather than 2.9AH.
To your question, yes, est kaput! 73s Jim, W4ATK On Mar 3, 2011, at 11:32 AM, Yves Dussault wrote: > The battery in my K2, KBT2 does not charge any more. > With 13,5 volts at J3 socket, I measure this same 13,5 v on the > terminals of the battery, but it does not charge. > The battery is 6 years old. My documentation specifies the following battery:
http://www.power-sonic.com/images/powersonic/sla_batteries/ps_psg_series/12volt/PS-1229_10_Dec_15.pdf which is according to the manufacturer is a 2.9AH SLA (sealed lead acid) battery. I know my kit was assembled in 2010. Not sure when it was purchased as I am the second owner. Maybe at some later date Elecraft has switched to a Gel Cell. I replace my battery with an equivalent with slightly less ampere hours (2.2AH) as it was locally available (Batteries Plus) and the cost was nominal at $19.26. Rated at 2.9 AH, the gel-cel battery is extremely safe, and can be recharged inside the K2 continuously from the same DC supply used to power the rig at home. Power outage? Jim,
In the common lexicon, a gel cell is the same as an SLA battery. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/4/2011 7:40 AM, JAMES ROGERS wrote: > My documentation specifies the following battery: > > http://www.power-sonic.com/images/powersonic/sla_batteries/ps_psg_series/12volt/PS-1229_10_Dec_15.pdf > > which is according to the manufacturer is a 2.9AH SLA (sealed lead acid) battery. My KBT2 failed as well many years ago. Rather than replace it, I bought 2 x 1.5A 11.1 V battery pack from batteryspace.com. Now they they have higher capacities. Much lighter and it seems to last forever. I charge it through a separate jack at 12.8V.

Hello Gentleman,
The battery technology for Li-Po is very mature. If you wish, please consider a Li-Po battery pack at 3.3Ahr capacity. Light weight and more power but of course, you have to select good quality one with protective circuit PCB. cheers, Johnny VR2XMC ________________________________ 寄件人﹕ JAMES ROGERS <[hidden email]> 收件人﹕ Gary Hvizdak <[hidden email]> 副本(CC) Elecraft Reflector <[hidden email]> 傳送日期﹕ 2011/3/4 (五) 8:40:57 PM 主題: Re: [Elecraft] K2-KBT2 battery My documentation specifies the following battery: http://www.power-sonic.com/images/powersonic/sla_batteries/ps_psg_series/12volt/PS-1229_10_Dec_15.pdf which is according to the manufacturer is a 2.9AH SLA (sealed lead acid) battery. Johnny, LIPOs have a tendency to burst into flame if not treated with great care. I always carried my RC lipos in a metal container after having one burst into flame. Scary!
I know some are using Lipos and they are a option, so please do not send me hate mail if you have gone that route. :-)) 73s Jim On Mar 4, 2011, at 9:01 AM, Johnny Siu wrote: > Hello Gentleman, > > The battery technology for Li-Po is very mature. Yes, James. I always insist on good quality battery and use intelligent chargers.
