K2 KIO2 Problem.
A few days ago we had a power fluctuation in our neighborhood. The surge protector and Battery Backup UPS did not help. The Power surge took out my computer hard drive, serial interface card and it would appear had some affect on my KIO2. The KIO2 still works with my KAT-100 and KPA 100 Change Bands and Tune, but I cannot make any connection with the computer serial interface card. I have run the Serial interface Test several times. Of course I replaced the serial card and hard drive, I even switched computers, NO JOY. I have checked all of the voltages on the KIO2 interface. The voltages on the J2, Q1, U2 all match the manual. The diodes (D1, D2 and D3) seem okay but I don't get an exact match with the manual. The voltages on the U1 and J1 don't match the trouble shooting instructions; U1-1 13.6 VDC U1-2 0 VDC U1-3 0 VDC U1-4 0 VDC U1-5 0VDC U1-6 0VDC U1-7 0VDC U1-8 9VDC U1-9 0VDC U1-10 0VDC U1-11 4.9 VDC U1-12 5 VDC U1-13 4.9 VDC U1-14 0VDC U1-15 5 VDC U1-16 5VDC J1-1 0VDC J1-2 -6 VDC J1-3 0VDC J1-4 OVDC J1-5 0VDC J1-6 5.5 VDC J1-7 0VDC J1-8 14VDC J1-9 8VDC Comments, suggestions would be appreciated 73 K2CG Chuck Gehring P.S. I really feel so lucky to have an Elecraft K2. A friend of mine has a IC-756PROIII, He got hit with a voltage spike last month and after several hundred dollars for replacement boards he still has to send his entire rig back the service center. I am very close to talking him in to buying a K2. At least that way he will have a Back-up rig for his K2 when the Icom gets back. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Chuck,
One can only guess at the root cause, but for starters I would suggest checking the continuity on the miniature RF Chokes in the KIO2. If all looks well there, try changing the MAX1406 chip (U1). I am assuming you are using a remote KPA100 - the control for the KAT100 and the KPA100 do not use the same lines as the computer interface (that is why a special cable is required at the K2 end of the computer link). Only the serial interface signals (RXD and TXD) flow through the MAX1406 (CMOS to RS-232 level converter is the function of the MAX1406). As for the voltages on U1, only signal pins 5,6 and 11,12 are used, and I would expect something other than 0 volts at pin 5 based on a +5 volt nominal signal at pin 12., so I susspect your MAX1406 chip may be bad, but check the inductors first. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > > K2 KIO2 Problem. > > A few days ago we had a power fluctuation in our neighborhood.
