K2/KPA100 vs. EC2/KPA100

Hi all,

I just finished building K2 #6100, and will start my KSB2 tonight. I
am a no-code General, and work primarily SSB QRO, although I look
forward to QRP'ing with my K2. In most cases, for any portable work I
might do, I will most likely carry at least two "enclosures": the K2
and some sort of antenna tuner. That said, two obvious configuration
for my K2 are:

1. K2/100 with separate KAT/100

2. K2 with EC2/KPA100/KAT100 (and KIO2 in the K2)

Question is: What are the obvious benefits or quirks between the above
setups? Specifically, I am wondering if with the EC2 setup.....

1. Whether the KPA100 behaves (i.e., "appears") the same to the K2 as
if it were internal?

2. Is it a simple plug-n-play to either use or not use the EC2 setup?

3. For QPR ops with the EC2 setup, can you run just the KAT100 without
having to power the KPA100?

Any and all wisdom will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Greg,

If you search the list archives, you'll find all kinds of info for this.

I put my KPA100 and KAT100 in an EC2 last fall and find it to be a really
slick setup. Lyle, KK7P has a nice webpage full of pics and details for

To answer your questions:

Yes. As long as the AuxBus connection exists.

I assume you mean pulling the "basic" K2 out of the setup for
portable/separate use - Yes. Unplug the RF connections and AuxBus cable and
your ready to go.

The KPA100 will still have "minimal" power applied. It will be in bypass
mode when you turn the power pot down below 10 watts. And yes the KAT100 is
still active. (This is the case whether the KPA100 is separated or not).

I put the KIO2, KAT2 and KB2 in my basic K2 when I split the KPA100 out.
Having a KIO2 installed makes the split very clean and easy. Although, you
can do the split without the KIO2 - Lyle describes that in detail. His
description using the KIO2 can be found toward the bottom of that page.

Hi Greg,

As Dave says, Lyle, KK7P has a web page with most everything
that you need to know to remote the KAP100 and KAT100 in an EC2.
However, if you want to remote it without installing the KIO2 in the K2,
the circuit diagram on Lyle's web page is not quite right (and he does
say "Note that it is untested. The risk is entirely yours."). The
correct diagram is on the Elecraft Applications Notes under "Control
Cable to Use a KAT100 without a KIO2". I ran my K2 with my KAT100 for
about a year using this circuit, since I planned to add the KPA100
eventually and didn't want to buy the KIO2 just for the interim... (I've
now added the KPA100 internally in the K2, but I may eventually put it
and the KAT100 in a separate EC2).
