K2 KSB2 mic selesction

richard gilley-2
Planning on adding SSB to my K2.  I have a Yeasu MH31 dynamic mic,
and an Icom HM 36 Electret condenser mic which are listed in the
manual.  Any thoughts at which would perform the best?  But I also
have a Icom IC SM5 Electret condenser with a built in amp., which I
would prefer to use but it is not listed.
Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Re: K2 KSB2 mic selesction

The SSB adaptor is very accommodating.  All the mic you mentioned can be used with it.  Perhaps, you should do some experiment.  I used HM36 before, it suits my voice.

Dick,

According to the microphone information at the G4WPW website
http://www.timroberts-vk4yeh.id.au/G4WPW_mic_connections/index.htm
Any of those microphones are usable.  The 'bias' resistor for the SM5 is
shown as 1k to + 9 volts, but the K2 provides only +5 volts.  You might
try 1k to the +5 volt supply as starters and experiment with different
values until you find what works best.

I have tried several mics on my K2,I also did the 1K R mod to feed bias to the Elecraft MH3 by Don's advice and finally have come to the conclusion that the best articulate modulation I obtained was using the Kenwood MC-43S that I purchased new for $52.I tried the stock hand mic that came with my former FT-2000 but even the audio gain was enough the Tx quality tend to sound too bassy, also tested the small Tentec mic that came with it and its too high pitch, you might keep this Kewnwood mic in consideration and besides will not need any bias saving you the resistor mod work done.

I have used the MC-43S as well as several others, finding many too high or too bassy...... after a lot of experimentation, I now use the Heil Classic 5 with the W2IHY EQ/EQPlus combo and have very decent audio..... The K2 can be very fussy about the mic you try and use. I found that by trial and error, you will find the best mic for your K2 and none are alike so have fun and experiment
