Hello,
Has anyone used the K2 on SSB with an Icom HM-12 microphone, and if so, how did it work? Would the HM-12 be a good choice? (Since I already have one…) Thanks, Gil. -- PGP Key: http://keskydee.com/gil.asc ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Gil,
I have not used one, but there is not a lot of difference in microphones. There are basically 3 types, the Electret microphones (which need a bias resistor), and there are high output dynamic microphones (most Kenwood mics are in this class), and thirdly are the low output microphones such as those using the Heil HC4 and HC5 cartridges. The first two classes of microphones work well with the K2, but the low output types do have problems on some bands (particularly 12 and 10 meters). Other than the class of microphones, there is the matter of the microphone plug pinout. My strong recommendation is that you change the wiring of the microphone plug to the Elecraft pinout even though the K2 has the mic configuration header which can accommodate most any microphone plug pinout. By changing mic plug, you have a microphone that is dedicated to the Elecraft mic pinout (no longer Icom). Icom microphones are usually of the Electret type and need a bias resistor. If you need additional information on microphones and their wiring, go to the website of G4WPW. He has compiled a wealth of information about ham microphones. Hello Gil,
I used Icom HM36 with KSB2 before and it worked well. HM12 and HM36 are electrically the same. For wiring, please follow Don's suggestion. I believe that is the one I am using. There are no markings but I ordered
direct from Bob Heil. It has the full and DX positions on the mic. I currently use the HM-ic mic on a desk stand. Audio reports are good after I set up with some local hams using the xmit equalizer on both mics. 73, Bill K9YEQ -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Gil G. Bill,
Sorry, but Heil did not sell the HM-12, that is a microphone only available from Icom. Bob Heil likely sold one of his microphones with an Icom adapter (yes, he did offer electret microphones while complaining about Icom's - and the Elecraft K2 - lack of adequate microphone gain). 73, Don W3FPR On 10/2/2012 8:43 PM, Bill K9YEQ wrote: > I believe that is the one I am using. Gil,
This does require mic bias. The manual will help you set the bias. Good luck. 73, Bill K9YEQ From: Gil G.
