K2 Microphone Jack Grounding - Is there a Pin 1 Issue?

VK1OO, Mike Walkington
Hi All,

Thanks for getting back to me. I vaguely remember there being some
discussion about a "pin 1
" issue. Should the mic jack be grounded to the pcb or to the  case? Does it
matter?  How is the microphone jack grounded on the K3?

RE: K2 Microphone Jack Grounding - Is there a Pin 1 Issue?

Hi Don,

Thanks for the advice. I did it the easy way. Looking at the other jacks etc
it seems that they are mounted to the enclosure panels, so probably no Pin 1
problems with them. The microphone jack is the odd one out as it is mounted
via tabs to the pcb.

Cheers

Mike,

To cure the 'pin 1' problem, it would be necessary to connect the mic jack
shell both to the board ground and to the enclosure panel quite near the mic
jack.  Grounding to the enclosure would require drilling an additional hole
in the front panel bext to the mic jack - preferrably a countersunk hole
above one of the standoffs that are located next to the mic jack.  But that
kind of sheet metal work is not for everyone, and may be overkill.  If is
normally sufficient to ground the mic jack to the PC board ground.  The K3
grounds the mic jack to the PC board.

I would ground the jack to the PC board because that is easy to do.  If you
encounter problems such as RF pickup, you may want to add the ground to the
case, but in extreme situations you would also want to similarly treat the
KIO2 (and use balanced cable to the computer), the key jack, and perhaps any
other connector on the K2 should be investigated for a 'pin 1' situation.
Such extreme measures are rarely required.
