K2 Optical Encoder Test Problem

sgbridge
Just started the the alignment & test Part 1 on my K2 (Rev. f) page 42. Everything went well, no smoke or error codes, until I got to the Optical Encoder Test step2. It says to turn VFO knob in both directions and verify that displayed freq. changes accordingly. The only change I see is the right most digit, and it only changes from  7100.00 to 7100.01. Obviously not much movement. Have not seen this particular problem posted so I'm in the dark as to know how to fix it other than check my previous work. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: K2 Optical Encoder Test Problem

James A-2

I had the same problem, turned out to be a bad solder joint on one of the
wires going from the board to the encoder.

Sounds like you are missing one channel of the encoder -- first step
is to check the soldering.  Looks like the two encoder channels ENC A
and ENC B go to the RF board via pins and 13 of J1. Check the
soldering on those pins on the RF board and the front panel board,
also pins 9 and 16 the MCU (U5 on the RF board). For a non-soldering
related problem check to see that pins 9 and 16 on the MCU are
actually in the socket and not bent under the chip. Maybe its just a
broken wire between the encoder and the front panel board?
