Hello everyone here.
Last week , I posted a mail on this list , reporting a problem with my K2. Strange behaviour , sometimes loosing all the commands on the front pannel , sometimes loosing RX sensitivity , and recovering it by pushing band+ and band - , I even found the K2 in TX mod e, mode where it decided to go by itself. Today I opened the box , and immediatly found the problem origin : There is a unused RS232 connector hole in the rear pannel. A mouse entered by this hole and used the K2 as an high cost toilet. I took all the boards off the box and started to clean them. Tomorrow I will reassemble it , and I hope all the problems will be gone away. So U all K2 users , U should put the connectors in the options holes to avoid this pb. I suggest to the Elecraft crew a new kit: K2BUG: ultrasonic board to avoid mouses , spiders ect... :0) 73 Dom/F6DRO _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I just put black tape across all the open holes from the inside. I figure it
might also help with cooling (controlling where air enters and exits). Oh, Dom this is priceless!! Too funny.
I could see how randomly placed natural semi-conductors could mess up a circuit. I wonder if anyone else has had problems with creatures getting into the K rigs while they are in the field? I could see a backpacker having something inside the radio when he wakes up in the morning. Probably a good idea to seal every hole. - Keith N1AS - - K2 5411.ssb.100 - - K3 wave 3 - -----Original Message----- A mouse entered by this hole and used the K2 as an high cost toilet. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I can tell you that moisture is a problem :(
last rove we spent all of Sunday driving around in pouring rain. Unfortunately, the Jitney leaks a bit, and as the day went by more and more water was accumulating here and there and one drip was landing unnoticed on the low-band station K2. It started acting very weirdly as you can imagine. We opened it up and propped it against the dash with the A/C running + heat, and by the next stop not only was it working much better but the overall gain seemed to increase quite a bit! de w1rt/john On 10/22/07, Darwin, Keith <[hidden email]> wrote: > Oh, Dom this is priceless!! He is a thing for people to do if there is a problem with any
electronics getting wet. I do model war ships that are designed to sink. What we do when the electronics get wet is, Open the unit, "unplug and remove battery's" With a squirt bottle, douse the circuit board with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol with displace the water from the board. Drain the alcohol and let the remainder evaporate. When there is no trace of alcohol moisture present, the system is safe to use. I have used this on many electronics systems and has worked perfect each time with no corrosion on the board. F6DRO: Rodent urine can be very corrosive - the combination of
rodent urine & fecal matter even more so & the former often comes with the latter. If not cleaned immediately - and cleaned properly - can come back to haunt you.
