K2 Q6 Equivalent part question

twimsatt
I received in my kit a 2SC5739 instead of a 2SC2166 for Q6.  Are the
parts equivalent?  Do I need to get the 2SC2166 from Elecraft for Q6?

Thanks!

Tom

Tom,

Read the Errata sheet please - the explaination is in items 13, 16, 17
and 18.
ALWAYS read the errata sheets *first* and make the changes indicated in
your manual.

Hi Tom,

In my K-2 the 2SC5739 turned out to be a bad replacement for the 2SC2166.
My modulation was very 'raspy' and no fun to listen to.
So I checked everything in the final stage to get rid of this problem.
Any time after I started my transmission it sounded good but after a while
the modulation became bad again. So the bad modulation could be a heating
problem.
By checking the 2SC5739 it was so hot, you could not even touch it! The
surrounding parts including T2 became hot!!!
After changing the 2SC5739 for the intended 2N2166 the problem was gone.
Just a warm (not hot) 2N2166 and a good SSB quality.
By checking the datasheet from the 2SC5739 it looks like this transistor was
developed for video purposes.

Just my 2 cents
