Hello to all: I'm very happy to say that my K2 was completed and placed on the air this weekend. I've been swapping spit with the big guns and getting 5-9 reports on 20 M! The K2 is running at 8 watts. I worked a bunch of stations in Florida and W1T off the coast of Maine. I live in Nebraska. The K2 has good ears! Antenna is a 14' vertical with 43 radials. Mic is a Heil GM-5. I purchased this kit partly assembled and completed the work. It has the SSB, DSP and Audio Filter boards in it. Now, I am working on the K100 portion and still have the 60 M board to install. Actually, I'm quite happy with the QRP and I want the Serial port on the K100 more than anything so I can run PSK. The K100 came with the kit, so I might as well put it to work. Next, I'll have to get a power supply big enough to handle the K100 as my present supply is a 30 year old VHF Engineering Regulated Power supply rated at 10 Amps. Special thanks to Gary at Elecraft for helping me with a PLL problem. I may have to sell this little bugger; I think I feel a K3 coming on :-) 73's and be looking for you on the air. Congratulation on finishing that kit, I have recently finished a K2 myself I just ordered the SSB, and Audio Filter for mine, they have not come in yet. The K2 has very good "ears", enjoy it before you get that K3. 73 KE5EBS Patrick Bourgeois > From: [hidden email] > To: [hidden email] > Date: Sun, 11 Apr 2010 21:46:19 -0500 > Subject: [Elecraft] K2 S/N 05143 is on the air! > > > Hello to all: > > I'm very happy to say that my K2 was completed and placed on the air this weekend. Hello Ron and Patrick,
K2 is an excellent portable rig for field day. Standby current is just some 180ma. With new battery technology, it can be run all day long even at full 10-15 watt power. KPA100 is fully integrated to K2 and of course huzzle free. However, you could rethink whether you actually need it. Or you have other QRP rigs which need a linear as well. If you have already had a big linear, you don't even need KPA100. The barefoot K2 can drive my ICPW1 to 350 watts. Of course, there are other linears much cheaper than ICPW1. If you feel KDSP2 is a bit expensive, a second hand KAF2 is not a bad choice. I feel KDSP2 has quite an amount of artifacts to my ears. Also the DSP employed is a bit out dated. KAF2 is much cheaper especially in the second hand market. KAF2 gives you effective filtering for CW at much lower price. Again, it is some what a personal preference. Re: [Elecraft] K2 S/N 05143 is on the air! I ordered a KAF2 because I prefer the sound of an analog filter the digital, on CW I find it gives it a funny tone, almost a "twerp" sound, and I do not like what it does to the voices on SSB. So I went with a normal KAF2 filter system. I have a DSP filter on my normal rig, and dislike the sound "effects" it produces to people and CW, sound like they are speaking inside a barrel or tube. But then I am partial to my older Tube rigs that I have restored, to me no better sound on voice then one of those guys..
