K2 S/N 5023 On-The-Air!

n7on
K2 S/N 5023 is on-the-air!

All's well with the rig, so well in fact that I'm cutting this message
short and jumping back into the NAQP CW contest.

Further construction and operating details later, but I must thank Jim,
K4ZM, for pinpointing the source of a last-minute problem ( poor 40m
performance) and its solution ("outer two pads" means keep the middle pad
open, not "outer" as in nearest the edge of the PCB).  Thanks Jim!

         Sounds vaguely familiar...  :-(
From my notes March 30, 2004 but 16 months
and >900 units later.  The manual could be
SOOO much better if Elecraft would simply
listen to their customers and incorporate
feedback into the next manual revision.

4.  Page 57, box 7.  "Install C6 (4.7 pF) into the
'outer' two of the three panels." could be ambiguous.
"Outer" could be interpreted as the two panels toward
the nearest board edge (upper right looking from
the bottom side).

Suggest changing to "Install C6 (4.7 pF) into the
far left and far right panels (straddling the middle).

(I hope I guessed right since I never found a photo).

Need help with test stage one power up problems on K2

Jess Gypin
Hi all,

So far I thought I was doing great. Just to save some time I thought I would
ask the collective before I go digging for misplaced components and solder
bridges.

I am building a K2 for a friend. I am at the first point of power up
testing. Control board, front panel and a few components on the RF board. I
got the INFO 201 for about 10 seconds, then the display flashed Elecraft and
then 7100.00 as it should. Now the problem. No front panel function. At all.
No buttons work and the frequency will not change via the encoder. Also one
in 5 power ups the LED display will light all segments and the backlight on
the display will come on, but that is all. I have done a good visual and see
no components unsoldered or shorts. I am extremely careful when building and
usually don't have any problems when building. Maybe it is just my turn. Any
and all suggestions would be appreciated. I am thinking firmware perhaps.

Quick update. I checked the 4 MHZ oscillator and it is working. On the
control board that is. Still no joy. I also unseated, reseated all of the
socketed chips and checked for bent, misaligned pins. Socketed chips are as
they should be. Also at the suggestion of another, checked to make sure the
"lock" was not engaged. Still no joy.

Front panel's U3 powers the shaft encoder, the push buttons and the
pots, makes it look guilty, but it has nothing to do with the LCD
display which also fails once every 5 power ups.

The control board seems to initialize itself properly whenever the
LCDs work, so that will be somewhere down on the list of
possibilities.

That leaves the three connecters, the front panel's P1 to the RF
board, the RF board's J8 to the control board and its mate, P2 on the
control board.  Some open and some intermittent connections would
aptly describe the problems you're experiencing.

I'd focus on those connectors before doing anything else.

Jess,

In general, if it worked once, the firmware is likley not to blame.  Check
the soldering on the front panel carefully - especially pin 1 of U1 - you
can solder it from the socket side if you cut away a bit of the plastic.
The normal reuslt of an unsoldered connection is that it works sometimes -
if you flex the board and things change, you can be certain that an
unsoldered or poorly soldered connection is to blame.  Secondarily, the
board to borad connections can cause similar behavior.  Check everything
carefully, then check again, and when you are finished, check the
soldering - have someone else check it if possible, another pair of eyes can
often spot what yours may overlook.
