K2 Signal to Noise on 160m ?

Jimithy66
Is there normally high noise on 160m with a K2 ?

Comparing the K2 to an old Ten Tec Delta the
k2 signals seem to be lower and noise higher.

A sharp sizzling frying pan noise was pronounced
on the K2 and uncomfortable to listen to but barely
there on the Delta.

This a used K2 and I adjusted the STP (Sidetone Pitch)
to my liking and wonder if that messed something up
or is the K2 noisy on 160m ?

This is the QRP K2 with ATU but no Noise Blanker or DSP.

Thanks,

Jim  /  W1FMR

You don't give so much information here about how you did the sidetone pitch adjustment, but it is easy to mess up things if you do that without adjusting filters also.

See item 3 in the list of 'Elecraft K2 do's and don'ts' http://la3za.blogspot.no/2011/09/elecraft-k2-dos-and-donts.html

The K2 sensitivity and receiver noise floor will not change much from
band to band.  In fact, with proper filter alignment, the internal
receiver noise may even be more quiet on 160 than on other bands.
You probably should not be using the preamp on 160 unless you have a low
noise receiving antenna.

For information on filter alignment for the K2, look at the K2 Dial
Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com.  You can also find
information about using Spectrogram for the K2 alignment on the newly
mirrored N0SS (sk) website at
http://www2.opparc.org/mirrors/n0ss/www.n0ss.net/wsdindex.html
