K2 Test/Oper Quirk

Craig Miller-5
K2 4790 with SSB and KAF2 is up and working very well.  I have noticed
something with the Test/Operate function which I'm not sure is a
defect, a quirk, or a feature of the firmware.

On CW if I select test mode by pressing VOX the "c" indicator flashes
slowly to indicate that the unit is in test mode, per the manual.
Pressing the "Tune" button apparently starts the tune mode but the
power indication is just 0.1to 0.2, indicating no rf output.  That's
all fine.

However, if I change modes to sideband, or switch bands to a band that
I left in sideband the unit stays in tune mode but there is no
indication on the display.  Several times I've been fooled trying to
tune up on SSB but getting no output, the power display showing 0.1 or
0.2.  Then I remember that I was in test mode on CW.  If I change
modes to CW the "c" indicator is flashing.  I can then turn it off
with the VOX button and then switch back to SSB and all is well.

Is this normal?  I believe I have the latest firmware that came with #4790.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes. TEST mode is entered in holding MODE in CW mode and it applies to both
CW and SSB mode and any band.

In SSB, the flashing U or L sideband indicator is used to indicate VOX mode
instead of PTT mode.

And, yes, I've wondered where the RF went on occasion <G>. I use TEST mode
whenever I'm away from the rig or have it on while puttering around the
operating desk because I operate with headphones and it'd be too easy to
accidentally key the rig and never notice.

KAT2 manual: inconsistancy?

Andrew Moore-4
KAT2 manual, Rev D, March 22 2001:

Page 6 instructs me to install standoffs at each end of the Control
board -- on the component side -- with the split lock washer between the
standoff and the PC board, and screws coming up from the non-component
side:

I  standoff
I
I
--  lockwasher
====   PC board
I     screw

Later, on page 12, when the L-C board is connected to the Control board,
the manual says to "secure the L-C board to the Control board's
standoffs (above), with lock washers going between the standoffs and the
PC board, *NOT* between the PC board and screws as on the Control
board."

---

...that last bit does not agree with what the manual said to do on p.6.

Right?  Or am I missing something, maybe cleared up in the errata
sheets...?  Well, it is 1:12 a.m. after all, maybe I'm just tired.

RE: KAT2 manual: inconsistancy?

Don Wilhelm-3
Andrew,

Yes, I believe the manual is inconsistant on that point.  Just make certain
there is one lockwasher between the standoff and the PC board (not 2) - and
it doesn't matter which end of the standoff has the lockwasher next to the
PC board - do it whichever way is better for you.  I prefer to put the
lockwasher next to the standoff on the conrol board rather than 'fiddlin'
with a lockwasher between the standoff and the board when putting the
assembly together.
