After months of using my K3, I am spending time again with my K2. It is set up as a QRP model, and I recently upgraded it with the DSP option. I had forgotten what a pleasure it is to use the K2. I know that the specs are not as good as its K3 big brother, but the receiver is still a thing of beauty. This morning I worked Belgium (from San Diego) with 5 watts. The op on the other end was surprised to hear California, much less a QRP station. There is definitely some mojo going on there. So I don't know if I have a point, other than to remind myself and others that the K2 is still a top-notch rig and I am glad I still have it. 73 and Happy Thanksgiving to all! John, WA6L |

I hope the ON at the other end was using an Elecraft radio too - he was the
one doing the work! 73 GM4AFF -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of WA6L Sent: 27 November 2008 16:00 To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K2: Vivat Rex After months of using my K3, I am spending time again with my K2. I often hear that old saw when people discuss QRP. However, I am not sure it is true or particularly meaningful.
He gave me a 559 report before he knew I was a QRP station. If you do the math, you will realize that if I was a 5 on his S-meter, 100 watts would give him a 7 on his S-meter. It is hardly a lot of work to hear a signal that is 2 S-units down. QRP on CW is not much of a handicap, and it usually does not take any extraordinary skill to copy it.
Additionally, I have had many, many contacts with other QRP stations. This has been in contests sponsored by the NAQCC, ARCI, and other QRP organizations. Who is "doing all the work" when two QRP stations contact each other over a long distance?
I have had some QRP contacts where the other station has shown incredible patience and skill in pulling my signal out of the mud, and I am very grateful for those excellent operators. However, that is not the norm.
