Stephen,
Check your power supply voltage - if you are using a wall-wart, many of
those deliver much greater than their indicated voltage.
If you have less than 15 volts at the K2 input, that is likely OK, but
something more like 13.8 volts is preferred.
The higher voltage can also explain the high current draw.
