K2 for SSB

Darwin, Keith
So what are the land mines in getting a K2 set up for SSB?  I've heard
mixed reports about how nice or not nice the K2 is for SSB.  What is the
path to "nice" and does it differ for the K2/100 vs. K2?

Keith,

Completed the K2 with SSB a few months ago.
And it is not perfect. Far from that.

BUT... There are a few easy mods you can do.
I replaced one resistor on the ssb board to increase mic-sensitivity.
Used spectrograph (see the site of N0SS) to tune the BFO right for a
good sound and that helped a lot for the audio quality, receive and
transmit. Getting good reports on my modulation now (mic is a heil HC4
BTW).

Another bad thing is that the SSB board has influence on the agc
circuit. Did another mod on the control board and reduced the bandwidth
of the 40m bandfilter to overcome this one. Easy mods. I could also
change the 80m bandfilter but that's for another time (X-mas holidays?)
These mods are all on the LA3ZA site.

And is it perfect now? Far from that. Cannot change the bandwidth of the
ssb filter, cannot move the passband with IF shift unless I program it
under filter no 2,3,or 4.
Changing the bandwith and playing with is something my ears need in
contests. So for that I use my good ole MP.
Lots of mods that can be done for ssb, including replacing the ssb
filters or putting another filter in the noiseblanker socket.

I skip mods on gain distribution in the K2 to get the power on 10m upto
spec for now. May come to this later if the sunspots are back :-)

I just wish all those mods were not necessary. It is a dissapoint to me
because they are really necessary.
Am I gonna build the 100W PA? I'm thinking about that. Before I decide
on that, I will read a lot of the problems reported in this group and go
through all the mods I can find.
Perhaps next year??

For cw it's a totally other thing. Love it. Thank God I'm a CW boy.
