While most recent attention on this reflector has been on the K3, the Stew
Perry 'test reminded me how well the K2 performs. My K2 #1429 got less than two hour's service last night because of a belated Christmas party at our home, but I worked over 100 stations with 100W and a home-brewed inverted L (36 radials under 3 inches of topsoil and 3 feet of snow). I was able to hear and work G4, UA2, DL5, HB9, CT1, KH6, and KV4. The best S/N ratio seemed to come from a combination of FL4 at 200 Hz, ALC off, the AF control at full on (clockwise) while adjusting the RF (IF) control for a comfortable volume, and the AF filter on the second position. I think I'll stick with my K2s for a while until I get a chance to hear an actual K3 in operation. They certainly do outperform my first rx ... a regenerative Knight Kit Ocean Hopper :) BTW, I had a CW QSO with W1BB sometime in the early 1960s, and he sent me his QSL card along with a large packet of material about his accomplishments on Top Band. Dang, it has gone to the same place in the sky as my baseball card and comic book collections from the 1950s :( I think me Ma throwed 'em all out.... 73 Todd N9NE KN9LWV 9 March 1958 No virus found in this outgoing message. The more I get to know my K2 the more I like it. A friend has a K2 that
I built and his A/B comparison with an ICOM 706 resulted in the K2 hearing stations on 40 m that the 706 could not. This probably explains why, although I can hear some stations on my K2, I can't work 'em! Come the autumn (in four months time), the photinia tree will be lopped, and I will be able to do some work on my antennas. Meantime a KPA100 and a KAT100 are on their way from Aptos. A very prosperous New Year to all on the list. P.S. the temperature has just fallen to 39 deg Celsius. I must go and put on my jersey.
