Hi Steve -
I had a similar problem. Check -very carefully- the ciruitry around the
crystals on the right side of the board. Check for poor solder joints,
solder bridges, etc. Also look closely at RFC1 and RFC2. In my case,
one of RFC1's leads was touching a crystal case and shorting out. Close
quarters in there. I was getting virtually no audio until that problem
was corrected.
Regarding the "tap MODE" question. Yes, exit the menu. It should read
"If you're still in the menu, tap MENU then tap MODE to select CW
mode."
