K2 no receive . . . where to start?

Mike Geddes

Finishing up K2 6042 today.  Have fine output on all bands, but no receive!  I did use another HF rig to create signal for alignment . . . and I did hear that.  I can also hear SPOT, so think amp is okay. But nothing from antenna. For reference, I connected my K1 to same antenna and receive was fine.  I checked voltage at anode of D6 on the K2 and it is fine.  Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions?

Thanks and  73,
Mike

No receive as in dead, no noises, or no receive as in I do not hear a
signal where I think I should?  Do you hear the birdie at 7 Mhz?

I do hear hiss and white noise, no propagated signals whatsoever, except one
very light cw transmission that sounded kind of like thumps on the wrong
side of the band.  And as I mentioned, I can hear internal sidetone.

Mike,

The best starting place that I can suggest is to go the Elecraft website
- on their Builder's Resource page, download the 'K1 and K2 Cheap and
Dirty Signal Tracing' document - there is nothing 'dirty' about it, and
it is not only cheap but effective to locate a failing stage.

Once you have isolated the failing stage we can help - at this point we
can only say that it is somewhere inside the K2!

If you installed the Rework Eliminators, have you plugged in the RE boards?

Did the receiver work at Alignment and test Part II?

I can tell you that the problem is most likely a bad solder connection
(or unsoldered).  Second to that is a misplaced component.

Thanks for all of the good advice!  The readers and contributers to this
reflector are a great resource and a wealth of good information.  I think I
discovered the problem, and it is rather simple. For some reason I had
reversed some of the 1SV149 diodes, specifically D30, D31, D32, D33, and
D29. Kind of a bonehead thing to do, not sure how it happened.  I have a
theory . . . . after I stuff the board with a qty of components, I use blue
masking tape to secure the parts prior to flipping the board over (in my pc
board holder) and soldering. These could have fallen out, and I was careless
sticking them back in prior to soldering.  Or . . . I could have just stuck
the little buggers in the wrong way in the first place!  You have to pay
attention to those thin TO-92 packages.  Anyway . . . pulled a lead off of
one when removing it so will order a couple more and see how it works.

Thanks again for your help.

Mike,

Glad you found the problem source and corrected it.  Yup - the IF filter
will not work with those varactors backwards!  I don't know how you had
any receiver function at Alignment and Test Part II if those were
installed backwards.
