Just completed building my K2 Serial #05622 with NB and SSB options
installed it went together smoothly, the problems was some distortion caused by the built in speaker. Bending the frame slightly solved the problem for now. Just received a replacement speaker thanks to Elecraft customer service and will replace the speaker if it acts up. Wired up a cheap 600 Ohm dynamic CB microphone that I picked up at the Sussex NJ hamfest and found that it has good audio and plenty of punch with the compressor set to 2::1. Be careful of used header jumpers. I used three header jumpers to configure the microphone, these came from a old computer board that was stripped for parts. I found that I had no output when talking into the mic in the SSB mode. Traced the problem to an open jumper at pin 1. Lesson learned look carefully at the inside of the jumper and found that the contact was bent over on one side. Loss of sidetone problem: Beware of secondary menu settings I must have accidentally changed the ST L sidetone source from U8-4 to U26-25. Thanks to Don Brown for answering Steve Banks post back on 4/19/02 The email reflector is a good tool for resolving common problems. 73, Bob Johansen WB2SRF _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. That happens in shipment, apparently, because the metal of the frame is too soft for the weight of the big magnet on it when the box it's in is banged very hard. After straightening mine back then it's been FB. Be sure to check your SSB output on 10 meters. That's the band where the audio level from the mic is the most critical. Mics that easily produce full output on 40 meters often can't make anywhere near full output on 10. That's because the overall transmitter gain is lower on the higher bands, requiring more audio from the mic to make full power.
