K2 side holes?

A local buddy is letting me check out his K2.  This one has an open hole on each side panel about an inch down from top and 5 inches back from front.   They appear original as they have paint inside. 
Are these holes normal and do they have a function?

Mike,

I would wager that K2 has a low serial number.
There was originally thoughts of putting a mounting bracket on the K2 -
it never happened, but the early side panels had the hole for that bracket.
