K2 vs. the world.

Darwin, Keith
Hey folks,

I got to thinking about the rigs I've owned and how the K2 has displaced
them all.  Thought I'd list them just for fun.

HW-101
TenTec Century 22
TenTec Argonaut 515
TenTec Argonaut 509
Icom IC-730
Drake B-Line
Drake C-Line (2)
TenTec Omni C
TenTec Corsair II
TenTec Omni V
Kenwood TS-830s
Icom IC-735
Heath HW-9
Elecraft K1

All of the above rigs have been sold (except the IC-735 which will go on
e-bay very soon).  I sort of miss a couple of them but not really.  The
K2 has successfully displaced them all.

73!

Dat's an impressive list!

So you's da authority on most radios. Ain't no-body, no-way gonna tell you
about any radio! u can say, "Been dare, done dat"!
Good for you , man.

contrary to belief, I do speak English. (heh heh)

I could only wish to own half that list but alias, never will. :(
My K1 will have to do .....

RE: K2 vs. the world.

Darwin, Keith
In reply to this post by Darwin, Keith
John, hope you don't mind if I reply to the list...

What I like about the K2.
  - smooth silent QSK
  - low noise receiver
  - very good receiver performance on crowded bands
  - pride of buildership.
  - Simple low cost rig that performs beyond its size and price.
There's no fluff here.  No gimmicks to try to cover over basic
shortcomings.  It is all about performance IMHO.

Dislikes
  - S-meter:  I wish it was analog.  I wish it was more accurate.
  - VFO knob:  Rough edge.  FT-100 knob solved that.
  - Low power out.  I'd love 40 watts for the same price.
  - I want a notch filter, but where would you put the control knob?

The other rigs all had their positives but in the end they went to new
homes.  I wish I had the Argo 515 and the Century 22 but when I think
back to how they were to use, I realize my K2 is more to my liking.

Oh, I remembered some other rigs I've owned:
TenTec Century 21 (2 of them)
  Drake TR-3
  Yaesu FT-101 (E, EX, ??)

73 All!

Nice post Keith. What is it about the k2 you like? It's nice to hear
what others like about the rig.

Well, here goes my shot at this topic... HF/6M only (cannot recall near
half the VHF/UHF stuff)
"*" marks  as still have...

In looking back at this, I am glad to say I rate the Elecraft stuff as
the most fun per $$$, highly portable, and probably permanent members of
my shack. I have not identified anything else as such.  Now if only I
had enough antennas and a set up to use them all at once... a nice multi

Home brew 40 m. receiver with BFO

Re: Re:K2 vs. the world.

This thread is too much fun not to respond to...

DX-60 (loaner)
HW-9 (First kit radio I built)
Ten-Tec Omni-D
ICOM-735
Wilderness Radio Sierra (40m, 20m, 15m, I built this one too)
KX1+KXATU+KXB30, then KXB3080 (built this one.)
Yaesu FT-817
K1-4 (bought on eBay)
Yaesu FT-897D

Currently I still have the K1, KX1 FT-897D, and FT-817 and like/use them in that order. The KX1 is coming up in the list, I am coming to appreciate this radio more every day.

I kinda started as a CW op, progressed through SSB to digital modes, and came back around to CW. I only use SSB in contests -- haven't gotten good enough to do CW contesting yet.

My Elecraft rigs have pretty much put the cap on QRP radios, don't think any other kit out there can top them. I am thinking about a K2 tho'.....

73,
Mike

Enjoyed everyone one of these rigs. Each had their own distinct personality.
I am amazed of the calibur of performance the K2 delivers in such a
straightforward design and small box. Really fun to operate.

What would I like to see next from Elecraft after the their amps hit the
market?
K3. K3. K3. But this time a rig for the main station. The same size as a
Mark V
with large rubber knobs and dials. Big. Big. Big. In kit form. Rig with all
the
features of the K2 but updated. IF DSP. The works. No shortwave bands but
dedicated
to ham bands like the K2. Wayne and Eric can make this happen but will they
want to
tackle something like this? I sure hope so. I would hope to field test the
rig. I
would buy two!

Wayne, Eric are you listening? Don Wilhelm,,put the idea in their head at

I agree there are many fine commercial rigs out there, but there is nothing like building your own equipment. I just wish cost could be kept to a minimum, as a blue collar ham, it took me a while to save for the K2 and the KPA 100. I do not regret my purchase as the K2 is one of the best rigs that I have ever owned. I think I will be using it for a long time.

Try the hfprojects.com amplifier if you want 35-50W.
You will need the KAT100 still though.

--------------------------------

Back in 1952, as a new Novice licensee pounding brass on 80 and 40 meters
with a homebrew one-tube (6V6) transmitter putting out about 10 watts, I was
also quite active in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). On
several occasions I had the privilege of operating net control for a 75
meter phone RACES net during a Simulated Emergency Test (SET). The net
control was a the home of a great friend and well-heeled adult Ham who lived
on a hilltop with what can only be described as a dream station.

After one of those sessions lasting all day at his rig passing traffic for
the SET, I still remember being struck by a thought as I closed down the
net. I suddenly realized that I was anxious to get home and make a few QSO's
on my little scratch-built 6L6 crystal-controlled oscillator rig. No matter
how beautiful my friend's station was, operating it was like driving a nice
car. It was just a very nice appliance that I used. It could not replace the
simple joy of making a contact on equipment I had assembled myself, perhaps
even designed myself. That was what Ham radio was all about for me.

It still is, 54 years later. I've never owned or cared to own an HF
transmitter that I didn't at least assemble myself, like my K2/100. On VHF I
built a number of rigs over the years, rescued a Gonset communicator that
was simply a pile of parts in a box that someone gave up on and put it back
on the air (then I sold it, Hi!). I've had a couple of HT's that only get
used very infrequently as a sort of "Ham-cell-phone" to chat with locals.
Other than those, all of my VHF/UHF gear has been homebrew or at least
home-built as well. Along the way a great friend gave me a National HRO-5
receiver that I tore down to the rivets and rebuilt with a new homebrew
lattice filter in the I.F., so it was a sort-of-commercial unit.  Even so I
was more inclined to use my homebrew receivers, most of which I designed
myself.

It's nice that Elecraft offers state-of-the-art engineering and performance
for home-builders like myself. Even so there are times I get the itch and
cobble together a simple little regen receiver or drag out one of my more
complex HB receivers, put it alongside the K2 and then go on a hunt for a
signal on the K2 that I can't copy FB on my creation.

Different strokes for different folks, of course. Building and making
contacts with something that started out as a box of unlikely-looking
fiddly-bits is what Ham radio is all about to me!

My apologies to N3DRK.

I thought he was the author of the comments but he says he wasn't. It looks
like it might have been William Parker.

I agree there are many fine commercial rigs out there, but there is nothing
like building your own equipment. I just wish cost could be kept to a
minimum, as a blue collar ham, it took me a while to save for the K2 and the
KPA 100. I do not regret my purchase as the K2 is one of the best rigs that
I have ever owned. I think I will be using it for a long time.

OK, here's my list of rigs I've owned and used in my shack. Does not include
test equipment, basket case rigs, or stuff I've forgotten:

Manufactured/kit:

Heath AR-2, QF-1, DX-20, VF-1, HW-101, HW-2036.
EF Johnson Adventurer, Viking 2, 122 vfo, Valiant
National NC-173 (anybody else read 'Kon-Tiki' as a kid?)
Hallicrafters SX-99, SX-101
Gonset Super 6
RME 45, 4350

Military surplus:

BC-453/converter, BC-454, BC-348-R, BC-342-N, BC-458

Homebrew is a whole 'nother story - at least 5 different receivers, 6
different transmitters, 4 different VFOs, 3 different transceivers, plus power
supplies, control systems, antenna tuners....

Oh yes, and a K2.

I had suggested this jokingly to elecraft. They should name those big amps.
For that matter include your ideas. Call it Elecrafts exclusive line of
Binford Model 6100's.

Yeah, you're right. But in 30 years of amateur radio, I'm afraid my
list is rather short:

Heathkit GR-81 (SWL)
Heathkit HR-10B
Heathkit SB-301 / SB-401 (used)
Heathkit DX-40 / VF-1 (Loaner)
Yaesu FT-101EE (Loaner)
Heathkit DX-60 w/ homebrew VFO (Loaner)
Kenwood TS-430S
Elecraft K2/100

This doesn't count the couple of rigs I built that I never quite made
a contact with, or all the different rigs I've used at NQ4I or W4WA
multi-op efforts.

I really love my K2. It has some shortcomings, yes. I still have my
Ts-430S (20 years old now), but may replace it with a second K2 here
in a few years.
