My next project is to install the 14 crystals in the K2KSB2XTLS package

Hi Sam,
I did the ki6wx Crystal Filter Bandwidth MOD and I am pleased with it. If you like to see the old and new Filter Curves, contact me. 73 de John pa0wit -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] Namens Sam Morgan Verzonden: donderdag 8 januari 2009 6:13 Aan: [hidden email] Onderwerp: [Elecraft] K2KSB2XTLS mod question My next project is to install the 14 crystals in the K2KSB2XTLS package ============== K2KSB2XTLS Matched Filter Crystals (14) For existing K2 and KSB2 combinations. ============== any one have any pointers, gotcha's, or other comments about this mod they would like to share before I get the iron hot? Sam,
No "gotchas", but on the RF board, solder the grounding leads low on the crystals, and ground them on both sides. On the KSB2, consider also grounding the crystals near the base. That is possible if you mount the crystals one at a time - X4 first, then solder its ground wire - after that, X3 and X5 can be mounted and their ground wires soldered near the bottom. Then you can install X1, X2, X6 and X7. You then have only 2 ground wires to work with, so bend one ground wire around the base of X2 and X1 and solder - do the same for the other ground wire and X6 and X7. The result will be a slightly better OP1 filter. If you did not follow the description above, that is OK, just solder to the top of the crystals. There is a small improvement, but not enough to 'write home' about. 73, Don W3FPR Sam Morgan wrote: > My next project is to install the 14 crystals in the K2KSB2XTLS package > ============== > K2KSB2XTLS > Matched Filter Crystals (14) > For existing K2 and KSB2 combinations. > ============== > > any one have any pointers, gotcha's, or other comments about this mod > they would like to share before I get the iron hot? > > TIA > > Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. By the way we are speaking of K2 #2481 here.
OK next question, the xtals that came out were marked 4.91 the ones I put in were marked 4.9136 and the package was marked with 3.7 I bought this rig used and already assembled, it works so well I haven't messed with any adjustments, other than to tweak the CAL FIL settings a bit. After this xtal mod, what part of the alignment should I go through? Any pointers to the page(s) in the mighty fine manual would be appreciated. Also, I have the following 'alignment' pages bookmarked: http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/filter_apps.htm http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/N0SS_Filter_Adjustment.html http://www.n0ss.net/k2_filters_using_gram_v5r17.pdf http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/k2_cw_gram.pdf http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/k2_ssb_gram.pdf http://www.qsl.net/w3fpr/download_files/K2_align_manual_rev_E.pdf http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com/n6kr_method.htm http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com/dial_cal.html so I have lots of info at my disposal, in fact, I would say almost to much, if that's possible. Which one of those references do I use and in what order should I use them? P.S. SSB boards new xtal mod been completed. I will have the new main board xtal mod installed by the time I begin to receive answer(s) to my alignment question. NOTE, that's just the K2KSB2XTLS xtal mod, we are not talking about any of the possible mods from http://home.pacbell.net/johngreb/KI6WX.html pages. They have not been done, yet, and may not be done at all, but perhaps that's a subject for another post..... Sam,
Use the K2 Dial Calibration article from my website - www.w3fpr.com (you already have it from my mirrored site). I believe it has all the information that you need. The procedure (in brief) is: Skip to the filter alignment (part 3) first, and set up Spectrogram, then do a first pass alignment of the filters and BFOs - close is OK at this point, so don't be 'picky' Now that you can receive SSB correctly, tune to 10 MHz WWV and set the 4 MHz reference oscillator - use the N6KR method for best results. Be patient here because the results depend on accuracy with this step. Then run CAL PLL After that, do a fine adjustment of the BFO frequencies - remember that you must move each of them even if they are correct. You are done! 73, Don W3FPR Sam Morgan wrote: > By the way we are speaking of K2 #2481 here. > > OK next question, > the xtals that came out were marked 4.91 > the ones I put in were marked 4.9136 and the package was marked with 3.7 > > I bought this rig used and already assembled, it works so well I haven't messed > with any adjustments, other than to tweak the CAL FIL settings a bit. > > After this xtal mod, what part of the alignment should I go through? > Any pointers to the page(s) in the mighty fine manual would be appreciated. > > Also, I have the following 'alignment' pages bookmarked: > > http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/filter_apps.htm > http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/N0SS_Filter_Adjustment.html > http://www.n0ss.net/k2_filters_using_gram_v5r17.pdf > http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/k2_cw_gram.pdf > http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/new_fil_docs/k2_ssb_gram.pdf > > http://www.qsl.net/w3fpr/download_files/K2_align_manual_rev_E.pdf > http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com/n6kr_method.htm > http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com/dial_cal.html > > so I have lots of info at my disposal, > in fact, I would say almost to much, if that's possible. > Which one of those references do I use > and in what order should I use them? > > P.S. > SSB boards new xtal mod been completed. > I will have the new main board xtal mod installed > by the time I begin to receive answer(s) to my alignment question. > > NOTE, that's just the K2KSB2XTLS xtal mod, > we are not talking about any of the possible mods from > http://home.pacbell.net/johngreb/KI6WX.html pages. > They have not been done, yet, and may not be done at all, > but perhaps that's a subject for another post..... > > > Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
