[K3/0] Is internal RemoteRig possible?

Robert Wright
I was looking at the documentation for the K3/0 and RemoteRig package and found myself wondering if there was enough empty space inside of the K3/0 to allow the RemoteRig board to be placed internally.  Obviously, some fabrication and custom wiring would be required and the CW speed knob would need to be accessed somehow.  With the WiFi add-on board available from RemoteRig, I can imagine a K3/0 with nothing on the outside except for the WiFi antenna.  This would be a very appealing portable package.

Has anyone looked at this?  Is it even physically possible?

There have been several posts on this subject. I've looked inside the K3/0 and there is sufficient space for the RRC AND a 12V mini-itx PC motherboard. I plan on seeing if I can get a back plate from Elecraft to modify for the motherboard and RRC so that I can always put things back as original. Initially I will use the internal headers on the MB for serial port wiring from the RRC. The cables from RRC to K3/0 will pass out through the back and attach to existing K3/0 connectors. This will not require any soldering or modifying internal K3/0 wiring.

Since the K3/0 has evolved into the K3/0 mini, there could be a kit created that extends the rear of the mini box to make space for the RRC and a PC motherboard, eliminating the rats nest of wires. This would be a great holiday carry-on bag package.
