K3/0

TF4M
I now have my RemoteRig for Elecraft K3-Twin set up and tested but only one K3..... Is there any news on the availability of the K3/0 ? Can I order one somewhere? Don´t know how long I can hold my breath.... :-) 73 Thor, TF4M http://tf4m.com/

Re: K3/0

TF4M
I should elaborate: I am now running one fully loaded K3 in my station. I am testing the RemoteRig RRC within my LAN - I have only one K3 so I am controlling the station through the link using Ham Radio Deluxe i.e. on a computer. The setup has already been tested remotely, i.e. from outside - by the developer of RemoteRig using his K3 and works perfectly absolutely amazing to watch. I am excited about the K3/0 it offers the perfect solution since I have no intentions of putting up any antennas at my second QTH and I will be away from my station for extended periods. 73 Thor, TF4M http://tf4m.com/

Re: K3/0

Tom-5
Thor,

Elecraft was hoping to have the K3/0 on the web site last week, and
they apologized about missing last week, and they now hope it is this week.

I am fortunate in that I have two K3's, one at my remote site and one
locally at home. When Elecraft came out with the firmware to link the
two, well, I felt like a 5 year old year. I had the total control of the
K3 remote. I had been using HRd and TRX. Nice programs, but hard to beat
twisting the knobs.

Hang in there, should be real soon.

Re: K3/0

TF4M
hi Tom,
thanks for the update.    I managed to secure a K3 on loan for next Month when I have to be away from my station, so I am not holding my breath anymore..
Will get a K3/0 as soon as they become available though.

K3/0 question to Elecraft

Jan Erik Holm-2
In reply to this post by Tom-5
Will the K3/0 in the future be expandable to
a K3/10 or K3/100 ?
Since, if I haven´t got the wrong information,
the price tag of the K3/0 is about half of a
basic K3 this could be nice.

Re: K3/0 question to Elecraft

Oliver Dröse
Hi Jim,

I would not expect that. The K3/0 shall be nothing more than the frontpanel.
At least that is what people asked for. ;-)) Still using the whole enclosure
of a K3 but just empty would not be what I prefer, it simply takes too much
desk space. But as nobody else than the Elecraft guys have every seen the
K3/0 we'll probably have to wait for Eric or Wayne to chime in here.

But half the price of a basic K3 would be a bit much for "just" a front
panel. I would expect a price closer to that of a TS-480 frontpanel which
Kenwood sells as single item especially for the RemoteRig system. But then
again it depends on Elecraft's realization ... so eagerly awaiting more
detailed information here, too. ;-))

Re: K3/0 question to Elecraft

TF4M
I would like the K3/0 to be built in the regular K3 enclosure. This would make it possible to build in the RemoteRig Control unit and all the regular connectors on the back of the K3/0 would match those of the regular K3 - this would make it so much easier to set up, it would clear the rat´s nest that is forming and when moving the Control unit from one location to another all that needs to be re-connected is the RJ45 LAN cable to the back of the unit. Or build it into the enclosure right from the start, that would save a lot of connectors and cabling. Why not make the unit with WiFi too? - a built in wireless access point for RemoteRig and the logging computer. There are so many possibilities here, I see this a start to something truly great - one box - a complete remote station. I really hope Elecraft considers this to get rid of much of the cabling. 73 Thor, TF4M tf4m.com

Re: K3/0 question to Elecraft

Mitch Wolfson, DJØQN / K7DX
I think there are two types of users here:

1) Those who would like a small head to take along when they travel,
where space is at a premium. Of course, then the RRC also needs to be
taken along, but this is much easier if they are separate items for a
small suitcase or carry-on. A method to provide the 12v for the K3/0
would have to be made, e.g. a pigtail for the RRC 12v supply if it can
support the full load.

2) Those who wish to use the K3/0 from a fixed location and not use it
often for travels. Here is neither size nor the 12v supply an issue.
This would allow one to build the RRC, etc. into the enclosure, or turn
the K3/0 into a full-fledged K3 at some point in the future.

We shall hopefully soon see what Wayne and Eric come up with!

When thinking of the cost for a K3/0 consider that the encoders are the
single most expensive components of the K3 and knobs are not
inexpensive.  So I really don't know the price breakpoint, but if it
turns out to be half that of a K3/10, I would not be surprised.

The bigger enclosure might also be able to support a very nice
speaker.

The price should be interesting... it probably doesn't matter much for
the remote mountaintop guys and frequent travellers, but a high price
("half the cost of a K3" as rumored) will limit sales to those who
might otherwise fancy one for use around the house or shop.

Well, that's a great idea, Thor ... everything built into the "big" box and only connect power supply and ethernet cable on the back ... in this case I could well live with the "complete" enclosure instead of just a front panel. ;-)

So now even more looking forward to hear the final news from Elecraft ...

I saw the K3/0 at the Orlando hamfest last week.  It looks just like the 10w and 100w versions.

The 'box' is pretty much empty inside, except for the front panel which I was told was probably the most expensive part of a K3.
