K3 - 2.73/1.98 Clicks on Power On

Stewart Baker
Hi,
Since installing MCU 2.73. I have noticed that power on is
accompanied by a number of loud, rather unpleasant clicks/clunks
from the speaker.

I notice the same thing, but only when there is a signal on the frequency tuned in on the K3 when power is turned ON. AF gain set at about 9 o'clock, CONFIG:AF GAIN HI. With no signal on the tuned frequency, the loud audio does not happen. I did not notice this on previous firmware versions. Later this morning I'll reinstall previous firmware and double check.

I have just tried this several times since installing MCU 2.73 and have noticed some minor clicks in the outboard speaker but none when using headphones. I really had not noticed this until it was mentioned here. My Orion does the same thing though.

Re: K3 - 2.73/1.98 Clicks on Power On

Len,

My K3 clicks a bit when it is powered on (and off too).  It has been
there since the beginning - and has not been dependent on any firmware
level.

This is just a case of hearing the electronics become active.  Unlike my
stereo equipment which mutes the output until all that switching on
startup/shutdown is finished.

I actually like to hear those sounds - it tells me that something really
is happening.  I sit and wonder whether anything is happening with my
stereo equipment when I first power it on, and I don't know if the
power-on really worked OK until the 10 second timeout.

Re: K3 - 2.73/1.98 Clicks on Power On

Ken Wagner K3IU
I just reloaded firmware suite 2.67/1.96 and the problem exists there as well. I guess I have just never turned ON the K3 with a good signal on the VFO freq. One other thing I checked... with the AF Gain at minimum, the artifact is not there, but with even the smallest amount of AF Gain, the loud burst occurs and the "loudness" of the burst is a function of the AF Gain setting.

I agree.  I've noticed the same effect since purchase and it has not changed
in the least with any F/W upgrades.

That's part of the delay circuit used to deliberately mute the amp until it
has a chance to stabilize after power-up.  Typically this is done with a
simple R/C time-delay relay circuit (or pre-packaged time-delay relay).

If the power on/off transients are too annoying, a similar arrangement could
be used with the K3 -- and the circuit could be built external to the rig.
It appears the rear panel +12VDC RCA accessory connector is switched with
power.  That could be used in conjunction with a time-delay relay to mute
audio for a pre-determined amount of time (e.g., my K3 finishes its boot
sequence in ~ 5 sec.).  Then a pig-tail could be used between the headphone
and speaker jacks to a small project box that houses the time-delay relay
and the two jacks for speaker and headphones.  Upon powering the K3, the
time-delay relay would hold the audio circuits open for 5 seconds, then
close the relay -- the same way its done on my Marantz audio amp.

Re: K3 - 2.73/1.98 Clicks on Power On

In reply to this post by Stewart Baker
Hi all,

Same here as Stewart and I replied already on an older tread on the same subject. Meanwhile I found out the following and forwarded that info, including an MP3 recording of the various settings, to Lyle of the Elecraft team, who responded to my post.

<quote>
The procedure to reproduce this is very simple. Tune on a continuous signal (e.g. in Europe we have a "rattle sig" on 7017.58, with strength S7~9. Switch off K3. When switching the K3 on again you'll hear for a short instance (0.1~0.2 sec) the signal without AGC and at 'default' BW => LOUD ! This is even visible because while the sig is that loud for this short period the S meter is at 0. Then the S-meter comes up to the S7~9 level, the audio goes to normal levels at the same time. Also the BW icon defaults at 500Hz (and I think the real BW as well) until the RX is ready and is set to the last used BW.

OK, just did some further testing, very interesting:

1. BW_DSP=2.7kHz + 2.7kHz stock filter -> not audible effect
2. BW_DSP=2.1kHz + 2.1kHz filter -> effect audible but not very loud, sounds as 'click'
3. BW_DSP=1kHz + 2.1kHz filter -> same as 2, bit louder.
4. BW_DSP=500Hz + 0.5kHz filter -> effect audible and loud
5. BW_DSP=250kHz + 0.25kHz filter -> effect audible and loud

The effect is not always as loud, it just depends how the power up switching coincides with the (non-constant) signal.

I have the strong impression that somehow this is a receiver boot sequence issue related to the default BW setting early in the boot sequence ...

Other relevant settings:

Available roofing filters:
FL1=2.7
FL2=2.1
FL3=<empty>
FL4=0.5
FL5=0.25

Frontpanel:
CW
AGC-F
SHIFT central
NB Off
NR Off

MENU:
AFX MD delay 5

CONFIG:
AGC-S 020
AGC-F 100
AGC THR 003
AGC SLP 015
AGC PLS nor
AGC HLD 000
AF LIM nor 030
AF GAIN HI
LIN OUT nor 015
SUB AF balance
SPKR+PH no
SPKRS 1

<unqoute>

So you can test a bit for yourself with these settings and see if you can reproduce this behaviour. I have not received an answer from Lyle yet, but I am sure he is digging into this as I type this ...

Thanks for your email Don. I hope I wasn't repceived that I was complaining as mine was an observation. Like you said it's booting up just as our computers do and my Orion does exactly the same thing when it is booting up as well.

Best 73 and have a Merry Christmas and a great New Year,

Re: K3 - 2.73/1.98 Clicks on Power On

In reply to this post by Stewart Baker

Since 2.57 to 2.67:

My K3/100 has always clicked when it powered on.  I thought it was just the
relays resetting or some initialization.  Is the click on the speaker or in the
relays on the board(s) ?

Upon boot up the K3 also keys the amp for a split second too.

I just assumed that in the boot up initialization this was intentional.

One thing that seems odd but acceptable is when I insert the headphone jack,
the audio reroute from the speaker to the headphones is not instant. It doesn't
need to be... it seems like a half a second or so delay. NBD.

-jeff

ps. OT:  For a weak CW op like myself, the K3 has given me the gumption to go
after some DX on 40 and I tell you -- it's wonderful to work DX with the CW
decoder.  I can copy, but with the decoder I don't make as many mistakes on
reading calls.  And, I admit time to time I turn to Test Tx mode and just
practice sending 5NN TU DE W7BRS at faster speeds to get my fingers muscle
memory working.  Last night there was a E51KAJ on 40 and I swore I got her call
right, but I have no idea who the QSL should go to. hihi!

I'm even getting a very loud blast of noise when I power on on 80m band
with no signal. I'm pretty sure the problem is that the AGC hasn't
activated yet. If I turn the AGC off, I get the same level of noise as
the blast on power-on.

This started with one of the recent firmware updates.
