Hi all,
K3 #4116 showed up this afternoon and I just got through with the parts inventory. Nothing appears to be missing so after a bite to eat I think I'll just get started on the build. Once again, the parts inventory is a worthwhile couple of hours - there's a bazillion different sets of screws and standoffs in at least 3 predominant sizes. Not quite as bad as the inventory I did on my K2, but believe it or not it's close! And it's all just screws and stuff, no electronic parts! I've filled up 2 egg cartons and one plastic sorter. I think 3 egg cartons should be on the K3 required parts list hi hi. Off to make dinner and then to get started on the K3. Seems smaller than I was expecting... 73, LS W5QD |
LS,
No, I would not recommend egg cartons. Many of them are Styrofoam (or similar foamed plastic material) which will generate static! The paperboard ones should be OK, but we have to be specific here. Good luck with the build - enjoy it. 73, Don W3FPR lstavenhagen wrote: > I've filled up 2 egg cartons and one plastic sorter. ah... noted, tnx for the heads up.. Mine are the paperboard ones but I'll still be doubly careful when digging into them for my screws. I'll have my ESD strap on at all times...

The other problem with the egg cartons is they flip over really easily.
(Don't ask me how I know. :=) My solution was to tack them to a board to make them bottom-heavy. Al N1AL On Tue, 2010-03-30 at 17:03 -0800, lstavenhagen wrote: > ah... noted, tnx for the heads up.. They are only $2-3 dollars each. You can have up to 9 divided compartments if you need that many. You can also have some larger than others. That's what worked for me. "... I went to Wal-Mart and bought a plastic fishing lure divider ..." John and All, Proper ESD safety practices dictate not having anything made of plastic within a foot of your ESD safe workstation where you are assembling or working inside your K3, or any other equipment that contains ESD sensitive devices! I just confirmed that this precaution is not addressed in the front of the K3 Assembly manual in the section entitled "Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage". 73, Gary KI4GGX K2 #4067 K3 #2724 P.S. Sorry to continue to beat a very dead horse, but I will as long as others continue to post similar suggestions which violate proper/accepted handling practices for ESD sensitive devices. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I always use 3 oz. paper drink cups from the local warehouse store. I
can move them around independently, only having the ones I need on the table at any time. When they are empty, I remove them and have more space on the table. If I need labels, a small piece of masking tape serves well. They work fine for components or hardware. 73, Rick Dettinger K7MW On Mar 30, 2010, at 6:00 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > LS, > > No, I would not recommend egg cartons. Rick,
While each has their own "favorite methods", anything in containers having sharp corners drives me nuts - I have to use a tool to retrieve the screw (or part) in the container. OK, so I have had a lot of experience with measurements, and I can easily distinguish between 3/16 inch and 1/4 inch visually, so I just put the hardware "kind-of" spread out in a tray. Then I can pick up the length that is needed from "the pile". I do not begrudge those who lack the ability to distinguish a variety of screw lengths and diameters at a glance, but for those who do have good visual recognition of those parameters, putting each size into a container that has rectangular bottoms is a recipe for frustration in retrieving the parts IMHO. The 'egg carton' approach is better because they have rounded bottoms which make retrieval easier, but make sure you use the paper-based egg cartons, and not the static generating Styrofoam cartons. 73, Don W3FPR Rick Dettinger wrote: > I always use 3 oz. paper drink cups from the local warehouse store. Just taking a quick break on the build and the egg cartons seem to be working ok. One nice thing about the cartons is you can kind of scrawl the size of the screw or whatever in the cell.
I'm almost to the front panel assy, so the rig may be built before I ever get to find any problems with my egg cartons hi hi. Some of the cells are empty already..... My KUSB adapter didn't come along with. It wasn't on the invoice so either it didn't get ordered or I forgot to order it (probably the latter). But the rig may be finished before I get to where I'd use it. At this rate, I can see being almost done with it by tomorrow night. Well back to the build... 73, LS W5QD |

Hi Don,
I think it is a case of whatever works for an individual. I don't try to pick hardware from the cups. I just shake out the approximate number of screws, nuts or whatever I need for a particular operation into my hand and place them on the table. Any excess go back in the cup when I move on to another step. It works quite well for me. I don't need to save up any egg crates prior to starting construction. I may put more than one type of hardware or component in a cup if there are only a few of that item in the kit. I just dump the contents in my hand and pick out what I need and the rest go back in the cup. I don't keep the cups that I am not using on the table. They go on a shelve, out of the way. I can work neater that way. When I have used the egg crate method, I usually manage to upset the whole crate that way. I have learned from my mistakes. 73, Rick K7MW On Mar 30, 2010, at 7:51 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Rick, > > While each has their own "favorite methods", anything in containers > having sharp corners drives me nuts - I have to use a tool to > retrieve the screw (or part) in the container. > OK, so I have had a lot of experience with measurements, and I can > easily distinguish between 3/16 inch and 1/4 inch visually, so I > just put the hardware "kind-of" spread out in a tray.
