Everyone,
After using my K3 for almost 2 years now I recently started to operate on AM in the 80 meter band. I get very good reports and have fun using this mode from time to time. Since Elecraft got synchronous AM working I have found that the K3 really does a good job of copying AM signals and eliminates quite a bit of qrm.
The issue with sync AM is the K3 locks to the carrier frequency of the received signal. With amateur radio AM many operators are using vintage equipment thus are not on the same frequency (sometimes in access of 1 Khz off). If you transmit with the K3 after the station who just transmitted is off frequency your K3 will be off frequency too.
To eliminate the problem I set VFO A and B on the same and correct frequency and set the K3 to Split mode and to transmit from VFO B. Now when in Sync AM mode VFO A tracks the received AM signal but you always transmit on the proper frequency (VFO B).
