K3 ATU Question

Ed G-2
Hi Folks,
Maybe I'm missing something very basic (or maybe still in a SS fog),
but when I try to use my internal K3 antenna tuner, the display says "no
ATU."  I can go into the config menu and set the tuner to AUTO, and I see
"ATU" on the display, but when I go to actually use the tuner, I
can't...display says no ATU.
I should say I ordered the K3 with the internal tuner, but until this
point haven't tried to use it - I'm assuming it's actually installed ;)  I
do have the second ANT 2 SO-239 on the rear.

If you press and hold the tune button it will cycle on and off.  Try holding
it down once to enable it.

OT: Electrolytic Fluid Antenna

Dave, W8OV
Have salt water and a pump?  Then you may have an antenna for VHF and
UHF.  See
<http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/techspecs/26041/?nlid=3794> for
the story.  A link there will take you to the original site with some
video and photos.

Try going into the CONFIG: menu and locate with the VFO B knob, KAT3.
Rotate the VFO A kjnob until the display says installed.  Now close
the CONFIG menu and turn OFF the K3.  Turn the K3 back on, and you
should have ATU function.

This is covered in the MANUAL in detail.  Remember, however, you MUST
cycle the K3 power to make it appear.

Try cycling power after making the config menu selection.

I guess that you missed my original reply to this "news".

Antenna design professionals have dubbed this "voodoo
engineering" and have decried the original "research" as a
  grant looking for a project.

Salt water has 10,000 times the resistivity of most metals, and
therefore almost all the power will be dissipated in heating
the water "rod".  A bucket of sea water makes a good dummy load
if there's a way to keep it cool.

I guess that this urban legend will never die.

Again, with apologies to the reflector participants.

Let's end this OT thread as it was fully hashed out several weeks ago.
Search the Nabble archives for info. (Salt water antenna etc.)
