K3 Anticipation- Preparation

Fred (FL)
Why do I need "Interface cables....." to get my
new K3 working, once I build it?  Isn't an
antenna, key, supply and mike enough - for starters?
Is the RS-232C cable necessary for something?

Fred, N3CSY

1.  Firmware updates.
2.  Rig control from the PC.

Well - it will be handy at some point.  It is likely that the firmware
won't be finalized when the first radios come out.  In fact, given the
list of "neat" things that Wayne and Lyle have been talking about that
will come after the first radios ship - there will be new versions of
the firmware for some time to come.

Having the serial cable will enable you to download these versions and
take advantage of the new features.

In fact - it is likely in the time it takes for the radio to get to
you - there will be a new version available.

So - while will be able to get on the air with it out of the box
(I sure did), you will probably want to update the firmware at some
point.

Serial cable or USB widget is necessary to get the latest firmware
update - it's bound to get better between the time your K3 is packed and
the time you receive it and get it built and ready to operate :-)

And you might want a couple of 3.5mm (12/8") stereo audio cables to your
PC if you want to run soundcard digital modes...

If you can't find 12/8" connectors, 1/8" will work in a pinch.

throughout the day...)
