K3 Beta Firmware Release -- MCU Revision 2.19

K3 beta-test firmware revision 2.19 is now available. Details appear
below and in the release notes.

The use of beta-test firmware is encouraged, but optional. Please send
any problem reports to [hidden email]. For instructions on how
to obtain and load beta firmware, please see:

* * *

MCU 2.19 / DSP 1.87, 7-22-08

* AGC: Slope is now approximately linear in dB.  Threshold
moved about 10 dB lower, closely matching earlier DSP revisions.

* USER INTERFACE: Minor clean-up of menu entry text and parameters,
help text, error messages, etc., to make operation more intuitive.

* SUB RX ON/OFF now has no effect on SPLIT, RIT, or XIT.

* SUB RX SYNTHESIZER is no longer updated when sub RX is turned off,
even with VFOs linked. This prevents an audio artifact when tuning.
Also
eliminated interaction between main and sub synthesizers during T-R
switching that was causing keying artifacts at very specific
frequencies
   on some bands.

* IIR DSP FILTER ON/OFF SELECTION now applies to both main and sub
receivers. (IIR filter on/off is selected by tapping the ‘7’ switch
while in the
FLx BW menu entry. IIR filters apply only to 100 Hz and narrower DSP
bandwidths. They have slightly more ringing than the default FIR
filters.)

Can you please explain what's been done to the AGC? I don't understand what the release note means. After I changed the slope to 15 I have been relatively happy with the AGC and not looking forward to dramatic changes in its behavior.

SLoPe=15 is still flat.  You might want to change the THReshold - or
not.  I suggest you listen to it and adjust according to your preferences.

Hi Buck,

This information didn't make it to the rev C manual. It will be in the
next revision:

* * *

Narrow DSP Filter Types

For bandwidth settings of 100 Hz or lower, the K3’s DSP normally uses a
type of filter that minimizes ringing: the Finite Impulse Response or
FIR filter.

If you don’t mind a small amount of ringing, you can select Infinite
Impulse Response or IIR filters for these bandwidths, which have
steeper skirts. Locate the CONFIG:FLx BW menu entry, then tap 7 until
you see IIR ON. Both main and sub receivers will use the same setting.

Mine came with what looks like the latest beta at the time of shipping (2.11, I
think). Anyway, it's certainly newer than the latest regular release.

Is it recommended that I keep following the betas, or wait until one of the
releases more recent than mine is declared "regular"?

I would just like to add that in certain circumstances with signals
buried in the noise this little bit of ringing can help the signal out
of the muck.
I find the IIR filters useful on 160m and I am glad the option is there.
Choice is good ;-)

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Release -- MCU Revision 2.19

In reply to this post by Jon Kåre Hellan
Jon,

That is something you have to decide.  You can judge the changes from
the release notes for the Beta relaease and decide if it is important to
you.

There can be residual bugs in any Beta software - it has been tested by
the K3 Firmware Test Team, and you can be assured that the most things
do work fine, but that team just cannot test every nook and cranny, so
there is always that lurking 'special combination' of events that might
lead to a bug (and users are asked to report).

If you choose not to load the Beta release, do not let your K3 lag too
far behind the normal release of firmware.

AGC Settings and DSP 1.87

KK7P
DSP firmware 1.87 corrects two AGC problems occasionally resulting in
complaints of unexpectedly loud signals in an operator's headphones.

The first lowers the AGC threshold.  It was inadvertently raised
sometime after release 1.47.  It is now back to its original range.

The second corrects a problem in the AGC slope.  As signals grew
stronger, the AGC was not properly restricting their range, particularly
for signals from about S9 to the activation of hardware AGC (about S9+5
or 10 in the earliest K3s; about S9+20 in later K3s and those with the
HAGC mod).

The new code sets the slope of the AGC as "linear in dB."  This means
that if you have it set for, say, 1 dB of output change for 10 dB of
signal change, then an input signal change of 40 dB will result in about
a 4 dB change in the audio level.

The slope now ranges from essentially flat output (CONFIG:AGC SLP 15) to
about 3.75 dB audio rise per 10 dB signal rise (CONFIG:AGC SLP 0).  Each
step is about 0.25 dB audio change per 10 dB of input signal change.

You probably won't need to alter any AGC settings in your K3, but you
may want to experiment with different values of CONFIG:AGC THR and
CONFIG:AGC SLP.  Remember, there is no "correct" setting; the K3 is
designed to be tailored to your preferences.

Enjoy!

Lyle KK7P

Re: AGC Settings and DSP 1.87

Gary, W7TEA
Lyle, can you describe what the Threshold value might be at a particular
numerical setting? For example, is AGC action initiated at about 5 uv
with a setting of "3" and a setting of "2" might be at 1 uv.

I'm still trying to understand how this works.  It seems the Orion
threshold setting worked in the opposite way--that is, lowering the
threshold raised the signal level.  Or maybe my memory is faulty.

thanks,  Gary W7TEA

AGC THR 2 is about -110 to -113 dBm or so.

AGC THR 8 is around -100 dBm or so.

(-107 dBm is 1 uV)

K3 Beta Firmware Release -- MCU Revision 2.22

Lennart Michaëlsson
In reply to this post by wayne burdick

Loaded latest Beta yesterday and it works well but
when using internal memory to call CQ on CW the transmission is interrupted
if/when I touch the DISP button. (When I tap the DISP button again
transmission starts again from the point of interrupt).
I cannot recall that happening with latest ordinary F/W, maybe I am wrong -
anyway no big issue. Would like comments from anyone still using latest
regular release.
Thank you in advance

Lennart,

This problem has been reportedalready, and the same thing happens with the
MENU button and SPEED/MIC and CMP/PWR. The problem wil be solved in the next
future I think.

Hi all,
Out of interest I thought I would try the new feature.  I only have the
2.7kHz filter but people noticed the difference when I swtched.  I did
however get a ERR TXF message when I switch it on and TX.  it transmits
OK but gives the message.  Anyone else seeing this?

Re: K3 Beta Firmware Release -- MCU Revision 2.22

Matt Zilmer
You have to use the 6 KHz filter for TX on ESSB.  You're TX is
probably restricted on audio bandwidth with the 2.7 filter.

From hfnotes.rtf for 2.23:

* ESSB (EXTENDED SINGLE SIDEBAND) ADDED:  Allows the K3 to transmit in
SSB  modes at a bandwidth of up to about 4 kHz. Requires a 6 kHz
crystal filter on the RF board.

To use ESSB:
(1) Make sure the 6 kHz filter is configured correctly  for AM
transmit; switch to AM mode, then specify this filter using
CONFIG:FLTX AM.
(2) Locate CONFIG:TX ESSB. Select the desired extended bandwidth for
SSB ransmit (3.0 to 4.0 kHz) using VFO A. Then tap"1"  on the keypad
to turn ESSB on/off. When on, the "+" icon in the mode area will turn
on.
