K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 3.41: Improved RX bass response; Flat DATA-mode EQ; "Live" memory recall; etc.

Administrator
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.41 (with DSP rev. 2.37) is now
available. See release notes below.

More refinements are in the works. But alas, it was time to "shoot the
engineers" and get some interim feedback on the many new features in
this revision.

--------------
IMPORTANT NOTE
--------------

The latest version of K3 Utility (1.2.9.30) must be used if you plan
to do receiver RF gain calibration. You can find K3 Utility on our K3
software page, along with the K3 beta-test firmware:

   http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

Please send problem reports to [hidden email].

* * *

MCU 3.41 / DSP 2.37, 10-02-2009

* IMPROVED RX LOW-FREQUENCY RESPONSE in AM/SSB/CW MODES:
Most noticeable with hi-fidelity headphones or large speakers.
NORMalizing
the DSP passband still sets the cutoff to about 100 Hz, but DSP
controls can
be adjusted to provide a lower response. RX EQ can enhance bass further.

* NO RX EQ OR TX EQ IN DATA MODES: That is, the response is flat
(rolling off below 200 Hz). The RX EQ and TX EQ menu entries now
affect only the other modes.

* "LIVE" MEMORY RECALL (M>V): If you tap M>V, then start rotating
VFO A to select a memory, the K3 will now switch to the band/mode
of each memory. Exit memory recall by tapping M>V a second time.

* VFO COARSE STEP ROUNDING: Tap '1' in the VFO CRS menu entry
to select RND=NO or YES. If YES, the VFO frequency will be rounded off
during COARSE tuning. This menu entry also sets the per-mode COARSE
step size. Note: The RIT/XIT control moves the VFO in coarse steps if
RIT and XIT are not in use (use CONFIG:VFO OFS to turn this on/off).

* CWT (TUNING AID) NOW INDEPENDENT FOR CW & DATA.

* RF GAIN CALIBRATION PROCEDURE UPDATED: You’ll need the
latest revision of K3 Utility and a 50-microvolt signal source (e.g.,
an XG2).

* SUB RX NOISE BLANKER NOW FULLY INDEPENDENT OF MAIN:
This includes the on/off state and NB LEVEL settings. Note: Set
CONFIG:NB SAVE to YES to preserve your per-band NB on/off settings.

* DSP INTERNAL STATUS MONITORING: In the TECH MD menu entry,
tapping 1 (main) or 2 (sub) displays DSP status information. If it is
“FFFF”,
no error has been detected. Tapping CLR resets the data to “FFFF”.

* CHANNEL HOPPING IN FM MODE LOADS REPEATER SETTINGS:
Repeater offsets and PL tones are now loaded during scanning/hopping.

* PL TONE DEVIATION ADJUSTABLE: Tapping '1' in CONFIG:FM DEV
allows setting PL tone deviation (300-600 Hz in 30-Hz steps; default,
360 Hz).

* EU REPEATER 1750 HZ PL TONE BURST: If a 1750 Hz PL TONE is
selected, a 500 ms tone burst will be sent on each PTT activation.

* EXTENDED 6-METER TUNING RANGE: The VFO can now be tuned
down to 44 MHz to monitor signals that may be correlated with 6-meter
band openings. Loss increases rapidly below 49 MHz (-34 dB at 45 MHz),
so a preamp (e.g., the Elecraft PR6) may be needed to obtain a useful
NF.

Are the RF calibration values saved in the configuration file?

No, they are saved in the K3 EEPROM only.

K3 Utility (1.2.9.30)

alsopb
In reply to this post by alsopb
Installed this.

Had it store my configuration file.

It won't let me store it again. (I normally also store on a USB flash
drive too)

Clicking on store configuration does nothing.  (It might flash something
up for a microsecond....)

Tried rebooting machine.  Reinstalling utility.

Same thing.

The K3 is indeed connected.  Port test says so.  The choices are not
grayed out.

Re: K3 Utility (1.2.9.30)

Don Wilhelm-4
Brian,

It works for me.
Be aware that there are several 'devices' that can be detected by K3
Utility that are not actually a K3 (printer, scanner, many others).  In
these cases, the Port Test will work because the device echoes something
to K3 Utility.  This is especially true if you are using a USB to serial
converter - Windows sometimes gets the ports mixed up.
To confirm that the port you have selected in K3 Utility is really the
COM port that is connected to the K3, go to the Command window and type
in some mundane command - like "k3;" - if the K3 responds, you have the
correct port selected, otherwise, go to device manager and sort out
which com ports are configured.

I just tried it here using K3 Utility 1.2.8.10 and my K3 loaded with
3.41/2.37 firmware.  I know this is Field Test firmware levels, but I do
not believe there have been any configuration save changes that are recent.

Re: K3 Utility (1.2.9.30)

Don Wilhelm-4
OOOPs - my K3 Utility was back level.  Just loaded 1.2.10.5 and did not
have the problem either.
That does not say that 1.2.9.30 is immune to your problem, but I don't
think it is likely.

In reply to this post by Dick Dievendorff
The list of what is and is not saved is on the Configuration tab page help
within K3 Utility Help.  If it is in the "not saved" list, you'll need to
recalibrate/reconfigure that.

"Reset" (EE INIT) initializes just a couple of pages of EEPROM, and that is
saved and restored by the K3 Utility.

Hmmm ... what other configuration/calibration items are not saved in the
configuration file?  I've reset my K3 and assumed (I know, I know) all those
configuration/calibration values were saved, so I need to know what needs to
be re-calibrated or re-configured.

Thanks

Re: K3 Utility (1.2.9.30)

Dick Dievendorff
I think I know what might have caused this.

After you save configuration, the K3 Utility retains the folder name of your
last-saved location as the default place to start "next time". If that's not
a valid folder at the time of the next save (which it might not be if the
USB drive is no longer there, or in a different location), the windows
folder dialog fails with an invalid starting location.

I've just added code in 1.2.10.6 (not yet released) that will try once to
use the last-used folder, and if that fails, will restore the configuration
folder to its default location.

Sub RX S-meter cal

Mike Harris
In reply to this post by wayne burdick
G'day,

Has anyone managed to use the proceedure in the handbook to
calibrater the sub-rx s-meter?

The metering is switched over to the sub-rx when in b SET mode.
However, as soon at you go into CONFIG the s-meter reverts to the
main rx making callibration impossible.  This can be checked by
rotating the main rx rf gain counter clockwise, the s-meter reading
changes.

Unless, that is, I'm doing something terribly wrong.

I never bother with the sub-rx s-meter in normal operation but the
implication is that it is adjustable.

Regards,

Mike VP8NO

Any word on when the Mac version of the K3 Utility might be updated?
It's at least 2 releases behind the Windows version.

Could we get an estimate on when the non-Windows platform K3 Utilities
1.2.9.30 will be ready?  The K3_software page is a bit stale on this topic.

I need to decide whether to go get a Windows laptop set up to run the RF
gain calibration, and I'm sure others would like to know as well.  (It's
obviously not an impossible task, but not one I'd like to undertake
needlessly if the release is imminent.)

I also noticed this the other day when I was messing about with the RF
Gain Calibration and then wanted to recheck the S-meter calibration.
Thought I probably had a button-push sequence messed up, but I wasn't
able to finish the job for the SubRx.

You're experiencing why I stopped using Apple Computers and developing
software for them in 1985.

They are good computers but Apple does not make it easy for developers
to create software for their computers (very expensive development
tools).  That caused x86 and x64 based computer sales overwhelmed
Apple sales as time went by.

My opinion.  I could be wrong.

There is an error in the manual according to Wayne and you cannot calibrate the sub rx S-meter.

The delay in releasing the Mac/Linux versions of the K3 Utility has nothing whatsoever to do with the lack of development tools. It has to do with the lack of a radio. My K3 developed a problem and is in Aptos now being repaired. The Mac/Linux versions will be forthcoming once I get the radio back and once I determine the software is stable and ready for release. I would suggest using/borrowing a Windows PC if you can't wait to run the RF Gain calibration.

BTW, Apple development tools are included for free with the operating system.

Re: Sub RX S-meter cal

Ken Wagner K3IU
In reply to this post by John_N1JM
The S-meter Cal procedure in the manual worked up until about v.3.15 or
so. Now I am pretty sure that it was NOT separately adjusting the SubRx
S-meter, but I never checked, so I'm not sure. It doesn't really matter now.

I have determined that, at least on my K3 (#202) running v3.41 et al,
after running the RF Gain Calibration procedure and setting the MAIN Rx
S-meter, the Sub Rx S-meter is spot on. It actually follows the
adjustment for the Main Rx S-meter, i.e., set Main Rx at an extreme and
the Sub Rx shows the exact same extreme.

So... it looks to me like there is no reason to have a separate
adjustment for the SubRx S-meter. I'm sure the manual will catch up.

Re: Sub RX S-meter cal

You're right, Ken: The manual mistakenly claimed that the sub's S-
meter parameters were separate, and the firmware perpetuated the myth
by allowing you to tap "SUB" when looking at SMTR OF and SC.

The next manual revision will correct this.

Sub and main S-meter calibration both benefit from the new RF GAIN
calibration procedure.

Re: Sub RX S-meter cal

Guy, K2AV
Is the separate S-meter calibration irrelevant (eg smeter cal is really only
setting up "front panel") once RF gain calibration is done in both RX, and
both RX RF gain curves are "standard"?
