K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.72: updated DVR support, etc.

wayne burdick
Administrator
K3 beta-test firmware revision 2.72 (with DSP rev 1.98) is now
available. Anyone who has the KDVR3 (Digital Voice Recorder) installed
will need this revision to use the DVR. We'll be making further
improvements to DVR functions in later releases. Full details appear
below.

Please send any problem reports to [hidden email]. For
instructions on how to load beta firmware, please see:

   http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 2.72 / DSP 1.98, 12-9-2008

Misc. Changes:

* LINE OUT INCLUDES TX AUDIO: LINE OUT (nor menu setting) now includes
transmit sidetone and speech/data monitor audio.

* IMPROVED TX PASSBAND FLATNESS FOR PSK31: When operating in PSK31
mode via a PC, high-pitched audio tones are no longer attenuated more
than
low tones.

Support for Digital Voice Recorder option (KDVR3):

Note: The following information is more accurate than the DVR
instructions in the
K3 rev D owner’s manual.

* DVR ICON: The DVR icon (dual arrows--above the S-meter) turns on
whenever
the DVR is in use. The icon flashes slowly during all record
operations, and quickly
during play.

* DVR TX MESSAGES: Message record, play and repeat are functional.
(Message
chaining will be added in a subsequent release.) To start voice message
record,
tap REC, then tap M1-M4. Record will start immediately. Tap M1-M4 again
to stop recording. To play a voice message, tap M1-M4. To repeat a
voice message
(e.g., a CQ), *hold* M1-M4 rather than tap. Message play or repeat can
be
cancelled at any time by tapping REC.

* DVR RX LOOP:  Hold AF REC to start receive-audio recording. Hold AF
REC
again to stop record. Up to 90 seconds of audio can be recorded; beyond
this,
earlier audio will be overwritten. Hold AF PLAY to start playback;
press any
switch to stop. VFO B will show the playback position in seconds,
relative
to the most-recently recorded audio segment. During PLAY, you can move
forward/backward through RX audio loop buffer by rotating VFO B. An
asterisk
(*) beside the seconds counter shows the extent  of the most recently
recorded
segment. Note: It is OK to record received audio continuously; this
might be
useful as a way of catching audio events that you wish to examine later.
Record will continue even if you transmit. However, at present, silence
is recorded
for the duration of any transmission.

* DVR RX LOOP PLAY IN TX MODE. First, enter voice transmit mode by
holding
PTT or tapping XMIT. Then hold AF PLAY to start playback, and press any
switch
to stop. CMP (speech compression) is automatically disabled. Note:
Playback
volume of the RX loop buffer during TX mode is not yet adjustable.

For software developers:

* VOX STATUS ADDED TO IC CMD (separate flags for CW keying ‘VOX’
and voice/data audio VOX).

Thanks Wayne,
I am looking forward to getting my DVR :)  I notice stopping playback is
via the front panel of the radio.  Can play also be interrupted by PTT?

Which playback? Message playback or the RX loop? I would guess you
mean Message playback and I would like that to stop if XMIT or a PTT
line is keyed too.
Can this be added as a firmware upgrade when the message chaining is
included Wayne?

I am talking about any time I am transmitting with it David.  If I am in
a contest I want to be able to simply key the mic and for that to stop
the DVR transmission with or without chaining.

RE: Re: K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.72: updated DVR support, etc.

Don Nesbitt
Great!  Please add one more to be able to completely "empty" an SSB message
rather than record something "short" over it.

How about REC > select M1 - M4 > CLR > select same M1 - M4 > rig returns to
operation.

While it does not seem to be documented, someone discovered (wish I could
remember who so credit could be given) that putting the "im" by itself into
a memory M1 - M4 on CW would result in "emptying" that memory - much better
than just overwriting it with a dit which does result in a xmitted signal
and amp relays tripping when inadvertently pushed in the heat of battle!

Thanks for your consideration Wayne.  '73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3/100

I have used my K3 with the second receiver installed in CQWW CW as 8Q7DV.
Just two requests for the future firmware releases:

1) Would be useful to have two receivers work on different bands. I know it
is on the plan but this is so important that I have decided to remind about
it again.
2) When I want to hear main receiver in both ears I simply switch sub rx off.
It would be nice to be able to listen to sub rx in both ears as well. Is it
possible?

Yes, please! I really wanted this when working 40m in CQ WW SSB - when
doing the "listening my frequency and 70xx" thing - when a weak station
comes in on "my frequency", I really want a quick way to get him in both
ears...

Do you mean to say that, as it is now, the sub receiver (2nd
receiver) cannot be on a different band? What is the use of having a 2nd
independent receiver if you cannot use it totally separate from the main
receiver?

Stan,

The K3 errata sheet lists under omissions - last bullet - "Independent
sub receiver settings for BAND PRE, ATTN, NB, NR, NOTCH".

So for *now*, independent band settings are not possible.  It will be
available in a future firmware release.  Keep watch on the firmware
notes to see when it arrives.

1.  For tuning the same band you are CQing on.  During the short listen
times between your CQs, you can find unworked stations in other parts of the
same band.

2.  For diversity reception, running a different antennas into the two
receivers.

The best way to simultaneously work on another band is to use a second
radio.  Different band operation with the two K3 receivers is a planned
enhancement for the future.

3. Working split in a DX contest where you want to listen for calls on
your own transmit frequency as well as where you're listening (e.g. on
40m, where the phone bands don't overlap between countries)

4. Busting a DX pile-up where they're "listening 10-20 up", by
monitoring who they're responding to, so you can position yourself to be
next.

Will the DVR be accesible via RS232 command?
If so the (contest) software programmers can add functions key to
playback a recorded message. This will keep the fingers on the keyboard
and not on the front panel

Yes this is missing. It would also be good to be able to turn the main
RX off at times, especially when using the internal measurement system
to check the filter attenuation, i.e. when setting up the amplification
factors for the individual filters in the second RX.
