K3 Blank spots in RF gain contol

Fred Atchley
I just had an enlightening experience with the K3 RF gain control that may
help other K3 owners. As the RF gain control was rotated clockwise, a
significant drop in output occurred over a segment of 3 to 4 degrees at
about the 1 o'clock point. It seemed to me that the pot had a worn spot in
it (I'm an old analog type.)

However, when I contacted Elecraft Support, Gary recommended that I reload
FW and do an RF gain calibration. His suggestion worked! The RF gain now
works smoothly.

I hope this info is helpful. BTW, the Elecraft XG2 signal generator sure
made calibration easy. Thanks Elecraft Support.

The DSP uses a table of values which map hardware IF gain to the
hardware AGC voltage.  The default values happen to be the curve that
matches my development K3's characteristics :-)  The observation you
made on your radio's characteristics are the net difference between my
development radio's IF gain versus AGC voltage and your radio's similar
gain.

When you run the RF Gain Cal, the K3 measures the attenuation for your
particular radio and stores the results in non-volatile memory.

Enjoy!
