[K3] Boot Camp / Windows XP experiences

dj7mgq
Hi,

Am I the only guy in user land, who is using a combination of Intel Macintosh,
Boot Camp and Windows (XP Professional) to communicate with the K3? I would like
to know what experience others have made with Boot Camp and/or virtual machines.

Re: [K3] Boot Camp / Windows XP experiences

Hi Toby,

I don’t have my K3 “yet” but I am currently running an Icom ic-7000 with HRD under both boot camp (physical XP partion) and VMware Fusion (virtual XP) on my Macbook Pro.  Both configurations work well but very dependent on the USB – Serial Converter cable used.  I also run MacloggerDX under Leopard to control the Icom.  I’ve found that some FTDI chip based serial converter work and some don’t.  I’ve had the best luck with Prolific chip based converters but you have to go to their website to get the Mac driver.  I think it has something to do with which drivers are most compatible with OS X.  I’m not sure what chip the USB converter from Elecraft is based on but I’m pretty sure it would work fine.   Also if you run RTTY with FSK only specific converters are compatible.  I run N1MM with MMTTY under Fusion (virtual XP) on my Macbook Pro with my Prolific converter cable.  It takes care of PTT and FSK.

I’m sure the USB – Serial converter compatibility issue would apply no matter which brand of radio is being used.  Good luck and enjoy your K3 as I patiently wait for mine.

Regards,
