Can I key my K3 on CW down the serial port line from a logging program?
I'm trying to get N1MM set up on my laptop, and haven't figured out the CW keying options. N1MM follows the radio just fine so that part is working. Off-reflector answers welcome. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2009 Cal QSO Party 3-4 Oct 2008 - www.cqp.org _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Fred, you can get the K3 to key, but the timing available in Windows does not allow good CW to be produced. The Workaround is to purchase a WinKeyer USB from K1EL and insert it between the Computer USB port and the Key jack on the K3. This is a function of Windows, not N1MM or the K3. You can not get away from the problem by using different software or a different transceiver. The WinKeyer USB has its own microprocessor to generate the code and accepts the message to be sent in ASCII. The WinKeyer controls the timing. It is not expensive and is very small. Get particulars from www.k1el.com.

FWIW, I've been using N1MM Logger keying via the serial port (and earlier
via parallel port) since 'day 1' of Logger on many different PCs, WIN98 thru Vista, 'real' serial ports and USB-to-serial ports, on different YaeComWood rigs, a K2 and now my K3. It works just fine, always has. The setup via the K3 is easiest of all since it does not require any hand-made cable or level convertor/keying switch, just a quality standard serial cable. I'm not saying anything against the WinKeyer, never tried it, never needed it. 73, Bill N2BC ----- Original Message ----- From: "WILLIS COOKE" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, October 12, 2008 5:01 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Keying via Serial Port? > Fred, you can get the K3 to key, but the timing available in Windows does > not allow good CW to be produced. I must say that my experience matches Bill's, except that it is limited,
so far, to my K2. (My K3 may be about a month away!!) No problems at all with serial port keying from N1MM on Windows. I'm no big fan of Windows, but this is a non-issue. 73, Randy, KS4L K2 #337 K3 soon! It all depends on the computer and the load on it. I've used serial port keying for years with a variety of computers. With faster computers and light load other than the logging program, it works fine. With a heavy load of extraneous I/O, like a telnet spotting network during Sweepstakes, I experienced occasional aggravating timing glitches that made it difficult to send at high speed and disrupted computer sending. So I switched to WinKey which eliminates the problem.

To all who replied to my question regarding keying my K3 down the
USB-Serial cable, A big Thanks! I've got several avenues now to explore, and the N1MM config instructions some of you sent me make this a whole lot easier. Thanks for the help, I'm sure I can make this work. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2009 Cal QSO Party 3-4 Oct 2008 - www.cqp.org _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
