Hi Jorge:
I bought a Pelican 1510 to carry my K3 to VP5. >So seems the 1510 with 22.00? x 13.81? x 9.00? is up in the limit. It is designed to be exactly maximum size and still legal to carry on to the plane and fit in the overhead bin. The case is quite heavy, heavier than the K3. >But the 1510 have interior dimensions 19.75? x 11.00? x 7.60?. The K3 will only fit in with the rear panel toward the wheels, front panel to the pull-out handle, and you must take the handle off to get it inside. There is only room for very thin foam between the sides of the K3 and the case. There is room at the front/back of the radio for power supply, cables, etc., and good foam to support the radio when you wheel it. The package is quite heavy, so if you have a long walk in the airport, you will want to use the wheels. And many airports have a bumpy floor! When you get to the gate, you can carry it so it doesn't LOOK too heavy :-) I have never had anyone weigh my luggage (except on very small planes). I will not give the case to the airline as checked luggage, because there is not enough foam to protect the radio properly (and the airlines ALWAYS throw your luggage on the ground). If I am going to carry the radio onto the plane again, I would get a case that's not so heavy - it only has to be protected from the other passengers cases, and no bouncing around in flight. I used a shiny alumin[i]um "flight case" meant for transporting camera and electronics gear, from a local shop. It is 18x13x6" externally. The pluck-out high density foam inside is a fairly tight squeeze for the K3, so it is snug and well supported. Small & light enough for hand baggage, and strong enough to risk being put in the hold if the airline people at the gate ever insist it can't go on board. Try your local electronics or camera shops. Much cheaper than a Pelican too. I was surprised to have no problems with it at the airport security scanners travelling from ZL to G to 9L and back, though I did have my amateur license in my carry-on backpack just in case they were curious. Also suits the K2 (instead of, not as well as the K3!), leaving space for Palm paddle, antenna wire, switchmode PSU etc. See my "K2 suitcase set" at: http://www.g4ifb.com/html/elecraft_k2_k3.html#K2 73 Gary ZL2iFB K3 #2887 K2 #1770 ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
The weights and dimensions quoted by others should not be relied upon, they
change with different airlines and NOTE:- are separately applied by the airport too, irrespective of airline. I speak from experience! In some, only ONE piece of hand luggage allowed eg - Last year in Birmingham UK. I took my K3 to Uk and back in a normal flight case, i.e with pull out handle and wheels on it, The K3 an easy fit, wrapped simply in a towel. (I bought the case for $3 from a charity shop) Weight passed the 7 KG limit OK - after removing my camera from the case at check in. I had had to put it in there at Airport Xray point, as 2 pieces of luggage not allowed. Theres logic for you..........! So far I have found a Laptop computer is always an allowed extra, and they never weigh them --- I doubt there is another 100watt rig with built in ATU and all the facilities the K3 Offers at anywhere near the size and mere 9 lb weight of the K3.... 73 David VK3DBD/G3SCD On Sat, Dec 26, 2009 at 9:52 PM, Gary Hinson <[hidden email]> wrote: > > If I am going to carry the radio onto the plane again, I > > would get a case > > that's not so heavy - it only has to be protected from the > > other passengers > > cases, and no bouncing around in flight. > > I used a shiny alumin[i]um "flight case" meant for transporting camera and > electronics gear, from a > local shop. Following the recent bomb attempt it has been reported on the BBC today that only one item of hand luggage is now being permitted on flights to the USA. To be honest with the ever increasing security I don't think I'd even try taking a radio on a plane these days. The anxiety about will it or won't it be allowed is a worry I don't need to add to the already stressful business of flying. It is only a matter of time before the only way people are allowed to fly is without luggage at all and naked. There is already a machine at Manchester airport that lets security guards see through your clothing. I think I'd rather not fly than be subjected to that level of indignity.

I think we can forget flying to the USA for the time being. I am wondering about going by boat for a nice change. I have been worrying what might happen if someone tried to hide a bomb in their underwear, we already have to remove our shoes - but this is besides the point. I don't think it is a good idea to take a radio transmitter as hand luggage, in the past yes but not now with the insecurity checks. You could easily have fitted a bomb inside, you may use it to jam the aircraft communications or even use its' sharp bits as a weapon. Obviously you would not do this but someone might and that is enough. Radio transmitters need to go in the hold or not go at all. Having seen how bags were literally thrown from the hold on a recent Easyjet flight I was in the plane next to in Toulouse, I would never put my K3 in the hold. So that particular Pelican case is unable to protect the K3 in the hold and so it would be a waste of money. If you must take the K3, use a larger pelican case with plenty of bubble wrap. Remember it will probably be opened by security so it needs to be easily repackable. Mike |
The baggage handlers unloading my EasyJet flight to Nice in August managed to fracture the welds in a steel framed suitcase and broke the antenna that was in there just from the impact. (I don't know if it's the French or if they reserve special treatment for EasyJet.) If a K3 had been in that case I think it would have ended up in several pieces. I can't envisage a case that would protect a radio from that kind of treatment.
