K3 Data transmission

Ted G3LPU
I wonder if anyone can help, when using the K3 in "Data A" mode and sending RTTY tone modulation from my computer, I am unable,  on receive, to turn on the RTTY dual-tone filter (DTF) --I get the indication "N/A"   The DTF works OK on AFSK, but it clearly states in the owners handbook (pp 29 & 30), that this option to use the DTF in DATA A mode is available.   I wonder if this facility is to be made available in later firmware ??   I have loaded the latest version available.

The DTF is only available in DATA AFSK mode. I use that mode both for PSK, Olivia and RTTY. The only practical difference I can see between DATA A and DATA AFSK is that in DATA AFSK you can use either the normal filter or the DTF. Since going from one K3 data mode to the other flips sidebands I just stick to DATA AFSK.

Ok Bob On DATA A  the receiver frequency shown is the supressed carrier frequency and uses USB,  whereas on AFSK I think it shows the RTTY mark frequency on LSB.   It is very clearly stated in the owners handbook that the DTF should  be available in both modes and so I wondered why I cant select it.   As you rightly say there is a work around by using AFSK.   73 Ted G3LPU

One thing to consider here is that (A)FSK is done with LSB by
convention, but other data modes are USB by convention.  Some modes are
sideband agnostic, such as PSK31, while others are not, like JT65.
There's a reason for DATA A being the way it is :-)

What harm would be done by allowing DTF in DATA A?

DTF is a special function for RTTY, and the K3 needs to know that thi
sis a RTTY application to set it up, enable the decoder, etc.  The K3
needs to know the tone pair in use.

DATA A is a general purpose mode that is unaware of the type or nature
of the data being sent.

For special cases, there is always the possibility of making specialized
features available in the K3 to support the spcieal case, very popular
modes.  This is how PSK D and FSK (A and D) came into being as special
cases of the DATA mode.

In general, DATA A assumes an external modem and (or computer+soundcard)
and simply does its best to pass the data without distortion or
interpretation.

So, no harm, but potential confusion.

re using Kenwood SM-220 panadapter with K3

Fern Rivard
Has anyone been sucessful in using the Kenwood SM-220 as a band scope looking at the IF of the K3? The IF's of the kenwood radio or the K3 are very close with only about 600 khz difference so it's a simple matter to tweek the oscillator trimmer in the SM-220 to adjust that. However, I get a lot of interaction between the SM-220 and the K3. I've also tried using a 10 db attenuator pad but still get erratic results.
