K3 Firmware 2.58

Bill Johnson-9

I found the problem.  I had used KComm software yesterday.   I used the 5 watt setting and this caused a loss of control over 12 watts on the front panel dial.  The 25 and 100 watt levels work  fine.  I will post this to the general reflector so others will be aware.

Previous message:

I was operating PSK31 on 14 meters and set power to 10 watts.  I used my keyer to transmit.  All seemed fine.  As EU was coming in strong, I switched to the phone portion and attempted to set my power backup.  No luck. I shut of the radio and turned it back on.  No luck.  Suggestions?

Hi Bill. This happens to me sometimes, too. I find that the KPA3 menu setting has been set to Bypass. You have to go into the menu and switch it back to Nor.

It's interesting that you associate the problem with using KComm. Did you set the power to 5W by double-clicking the shortcut? Perhaps setting the power level by software command causes the problem? However I quite often set the power to 5W using this shortcut and I certainly do not disable the PA every time.

RE: K3 Firmware 2.58

Bill Johnson-9
Julian,

I set the power by double clicking in the software.  I made no changes to
the config settings so this was definitely a software created change.

I have never disabled the PA intentionally from the menu either.

Strange. All the shortcut does is cause the commands: PC0500;PC;DS; to be sent to the radio. You can right-click it and see the commands that are sent, and change them if you want to.

The PC0500; sets the power to 5W. The PC; causes the power level to be reported back to the program straight away and the DS; causes the status information to be updated.

Only the first command is necessary to set the power. The others are just so you can see the effect immediately. Nothing that is sent should have the effect of disabling the PA permanently.

Julian,

Here's what's in the command:  PC0500;PC;DS;

I tried it again and I get the same thing.  The power cannot be adjusted
with the front panel dial past 12 watts.

You are right. Perhaps someone can advise how to reduce power to below 12W by software command without disabling the ability to increase it above that level again using the front panel control.

Julian,

Assuming you are using the K22; extended mode, use
PC0051; to set 5 Watts (5 Watts, high range).  The
PC0500; sets to 5.0 Watts in the low range (turns
off the PA).

The only downside to using the PC0051; syntax is that
you can't set the power to other than integral values
of power (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, etc. Watts).

RE: K3 Firmware 2.58

Bill Johnson-9
Wayne, Joe and Julian,

Thank you!  I will change to the 0051.  If I want lower will send 0050.  One
watt increments work for me.  I usually use 2 watts or 75, very little in
between.  I will use my K2 for variations in between if I so choose.
