K3 Firmware Update

wayne burdick
Administrator
We've released a new revision of K3 firmware (both MCU and DSP). Please
see the release notes below.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 1.65 and DSP 1.52, 1-27-08

   * TUNE POWER level menu entry added (TUN PWR). This determines the
power level used
when the TUNE switch is pressed. The default, "NOR", uses the power
knob setting.
Alternatively, the value can be set to any power level from 0.1-120
W.

  *  EXTERNAL CW TIMING IMPROVED: Corrected rise/fall time asymmetry.
Internal
and external keyers should now be closely matched in weighting.
NOTE: You may need to reduce the weight of external keying, if you
had increased
     it to compensate.

   * REAL-TIME-CLOCK display now keeps accurate time. The RTC IC itself
was running
accurately, but the VFO B time display was running about 10% slow.

   * MODE SWITCH now only cycles through one sideband (LSB or USB) on
each band --
not both. Saves time when switching modes, especially useful in
contest situations.
Use the ALT switch (hold the left end of MODE) to switch between
LSB and USB (per-band).
NOTE: As a result of this change, you may need to re-select the
desired sideband on
some bands. You'll only have to do this once.

   * S-METER ACCURACY Improved. Suggest using SMTR SC=14 and SMTR OF=24
     (these are the normal defaults).

Great, there is only one other company that I have experience of, that
responds in this way, and that is DogPark Software who wrote MacLoggerDX.

Wonderful service Wayne.

Tune Power - greatly desired, thank you.

Mode Switch - really good button press saver :)

Installed via Mac software, no problem. Thanks for Mac K3 utility too :)

I still think my RTC runs slow by about 8 seconds over 48hrs, but the jury
is still out on that one and if it does, I doubt there is much you can do.

I had an email answer from an engineer at SGC within an hour of
sending a question.  I asked if the MC68HC711E9 in my new SG-231
tuner was copy protected. SGC could have put critical code in the
EEROM, which can be erased when the processor enters bootstrap mode.
I have four E9s in my junkbox and now I have a backup E9 in case
the original dies.

The spec is +/- 2 seconds per day, so you're a little high. This means
that the real-time-clock chip's 32 kHz oscillator is running slowly.
You could slightly reduce the size of the associated capacitor(s) until
the frequency is exactly 32768 Hz (2^15). If you try this, use very
light coupling to the crystal, because even 1 pF will shift the
frequency significantly.

I have a long-term project on the wish list that would allow you to
enter an RTC clock correction in a menu entry. A few other things to do
first  ;)

Wayne

Yes, Don Argo is very responsive--love MacLoggerDX.  I'd also have to mention John Henry
at Ten Tec for is his great firmware support with the Omni VII.

I can't wait to get my K3 so I can fully appreciate Wayne and the super
service he and Elecraft provide. But it will be months unfortunately.

What a dream come true.  I would have had to have boxed up and shipped my
present high-end rig back to Japan four times by now for the same amount of
updates.  You guys amaze me!

RE: K3 Firmware Update

Don Nesbitt
In reply to this post by Don Ehrlich
You must first enable the "Tech MD" menu item.  Config ==> Tech MD ==> use
VFO A to set it to ON ==> now use VFO B to locate TUN PWR ==> use VFO A to
set power ==> tap MEMU  -- Done.

Now when you Push and hold XMIT to get to the TUNE function, it will provide
the power you set - while there, you can now increase the power with the PWR
control to continue tuning up your amp at higher power.  When you are
finished, the next "TUNE" will be reset to the default that you set earlier.
Very handy!  73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3 #83

Yes. I didn't expect it to be buried in there, but I guess I won't really need to change it that often. Now all I need is for the ATU in/out setting to be stored separately for ANT 1 and 2 and I'll be able to change antennas with one button press and tune with one more!

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but at some point, it might be nice
to be  able to tune with a button tap instead of a press - I don't use
[XMIT] at all, but do use [TUNE] a lot, I'd like to be able to swap the
function.

As a matter of curiosity, what do people use [XMIT] for?

When Wayne works on the next revision this is one of the items likely to be

I think that might be hard to achive, because the K3 would have to know whether you'd finished tuning or not. Knowing Elecraft, a mind reading add-on is probably in the works.
As a matter of curiosity, what do people use [XMIT] for?
Given that my new Heil desk mic doesn't have a locking PTT, I'd probably use it for rag chew voice QSOs to avoid having to keep pressing the button down. The only reason I haven't actually used it for that is that I don't use phone that much.

I meant a Tap to start tune, currently its a HOLD to start tune, followed by
a TAP to stop - yeah, ok, its a matter of a second.

Personally, I would prefer to hold the tune button, that way I cannot
put it into actual tx by accident.  Xmit will only actually send
anything if you speak or key.  Catching the tune button actually puts
out power.
