After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16
since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration! Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3 Utility.....The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched 9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a "K3 not responding" on Com Ports 1 and 2, and "Another app connected to" Com port 4. I'd just order the CD, but that would not solve my communication from the computer to the K3. What should I try next? ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

I assume you have no regular serial port. Have you tried the adapter with your K3 and a control/logging program like HRD? Some usb to serial adapters are quirky.

It's unlikely to be COM1 or 2 - those are usually [reserved for] built-in serial ports. Right-click "My Computer", choose "Manage", then in the window that opens, click on "Device Manager", then expand the "Ports" sub-tree. You should see currently available serial ports there. See if one of them comes and goes when you plug / unplug the USB adapter. If so, you know which one you would be choosing in K3 Utility. If not, you probably have a driver (or hardware) problem. ~Iain / N6ML ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Jay, there's a K3 Utility Help page dedicated to troubleshooting USB to
Serial adapter issues. My guess is that you're not finding the right COM port number for the USB to Serial Adapter. There's a separate troubleshooting Help page, "Finding the right COM port" on that topic. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Iain MacDonnell - N6ML Sent: Monday, April 06, 2009 1:11 PM To: Jay Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware upgrade harder than construction...Help Jay wrote: > After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16 > since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration! > Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB > plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3 > Utility.....The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched > 9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a "K3 not responding" on Com > Ports 1 and 2, and "Another app connected to" Com port 4. Dick,
This may not be the case. I struggled for 2 months to get my USB to serial cable to work correctly. I bought the Elecraft cable, downloaded the Prolific driver and I could not get,in my case, LP Pan to function properly. I fixed it yesterday, after some local help (Tnx N3EAQ) and an email to N8LP, by going to a straight serial cable. LP Pan and PowerSDR are now working simultaneously with 4 other programs. The telling event was when we looked at the COM ports every time I unplugged and reconnected the USB cable the other ports though they were busy. N8LP believes it is a conflict with the chip set in some computers. I also installed 2 GB of ram and an upscale sound card thinking my 2.54 GHz CPU was having issues. I have a Foxconn 661MX motherboard. 73, Sid K3SX Dick Dievendorff wrote: > Jay, there's a K3 Utility Help page dedicated to troubleshooting USB to > Serial adapter issues. > > My guess is that you're not finding the right COM port number for the USB to > Serial Adapter. > > There's a separate troubleshooting Help page, "Finding the right COM port" > on that topic. > > 73 de Dick, K6KR > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [hidden email] > [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Iain MacDonnell - > N6ML > Sent: Monday, April 06, 2009 1:11 PM > To: Jay > Cc: [hidden email] > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware upgrade harder than construction...Help > > > > Jay wrote: >> After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16 >> since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration! >> Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB >> plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3 >> Utility.....The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched >> 9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a "K3 not responding" on Com >> Ports 1 and 2, and "Another app connected to" Com port 4. I'd go into WINDOWS device manager.
start; right mouse click on my computer; that will get you to where you can click on "manage"; then device manager... then "ports" You will then see all the com ports.... one of them might be a modem , but one will suggest a USB connection like prolific USB..... That is the one you want. Also your COM4 might be in use... because the usb is hooked to it .,.. I would try it anyway,,,, that is where my usb dongle appears.. bill ny9h At 12:16 PM 4/4/2009, Jay wrote: >After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16 >since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration! >Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB >plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3 >Utility.....The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched >9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a "K3 not responding" on Com >Ports 1 and 2, and "Another app connected to" Com port 4. Wayne, et al,
Is there any way to have a continuous display of one of the functions adjusted by the 4 multifunction knobs, e.g., power, mic, width, etc.? The other day I was making amplifier adjustments and had to keep adjusting the power knob. I would have liked the display of power on VFO B to remain on, rather than reverting to the normal display after a second. Similarly, if one is making audio adjustments, it would be convenient to have comp or mic be on continuously. Assuming this can't be done now (or am I missing something obvious?), then one way to do this would be to add a CTRL HLD function to the various displays that are accessible on VFO B when the DISP button is pressed. Then perhaps the most recently adjusted knob parameter should remain displayed until another such knob is turned, or until the DISP is changed. This might be a Tech Md On function. 73, Andy, AE6Y ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
