Installation of the .zip version of the Freq Mem Editor failed on my Win98SE
machine. I unzipped in my own temporary directory (nonstandard name) and double-clicked setup.exe as instructed. Is there some special place where the .msi file should be placed? I believe that I already have some .msi files here and there from other downloads. I do not have "DotNet" installed, as I have never needed it. The log file shows the following, ending in an error message that setup.exe displayed when it abended: The following properties have been set: Property: [AdminUser] = true {boolean} Property: [ProcessorArchitecture] = Intel {string} Property: [Version9x] = 4.10.0 {version} Running checks for package '.NET Framework 2.0', phase BuildList Running external check with command line "c:\windows\TEMP\VSD6012.TMP\dotnetfx\dotnetchk.exe" Process exited with code 0 Setting value '0 {int}' for property 'DotNetInstalled' Reading value 'Version' of registry key 'HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer' Read string value '6.0.2800.1106' Setting value '6.0.2800.1106 {string}' for property 'IEVersion' The following properties have been set for package '.NET Framework 2.0': Property: [DotNetInstalled] = 0 {int} Property: [IEVersion] = 6.0.2800.1106 {string} Running checks for command 'dotnetfx\instmsia.exe' Result of running operator 'ValueExists' on property 'VersionNT': false Result of running operator 'VersionGreaterThanOrEqualTo' on property 'VersionMsi' and value '2.0': true Result of checks for command 'dotnetfx\instmsia.exe' is 'Bypass' Running checks for command 'dotnetfx\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe' Result of running operator 'ValueExists' on property 'Version9x': true Result of checks for command 'dotnetfx\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe' is 'Bypass' Running checks for command 'dotnetfx\dotnetfx.exe' Result of running operator 'ValueNotEqualTo' on property 'DotNetInstalled' and value '0': false Result of running operator 'ValueEqualTo' on property 'AdminUser' and value 'false': false Skipping FailIf because Property 'Version9X' was not defined Skipping FailIf because Property 'VersionNT' was not defined Result of running operator 'ValueNotExists' on property 'IEVersion': false Result of running operator 'VersionLessThan' on property 'IEVersion' and value '5.01': false Result of running operator 'ValueNotEqualTo' on property 'ProcessorArchitecture' and value 'Intel': false Result of checks for command 'dotnetfx\dotnetfx.exe' is 'Install' '.NET Framework 2.0' RunCheck result: Install Needed Running checks for package 'Windows Installer 3.1', phase BuildList The following properties have been set for package 'Windows Installer 3.1': Running checks for command 'WindowsInstaller3_1\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe' Result of running operator 'VersionGreaterThanOrEqualTo' on property 'VersionMsi' and value '3.1': false Result of running operator 'ValueExists' on property 'Version9x': true Result of checks for command 'WindowsInstaller3_1\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe' is 'Fail' 'Windows Installer 3.1' RunCheck result: Fail A prerequisite failed for Package "Windows Installer 3.1" Package failed with message "Installation of Windows Installer 3.1 requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later. The K3 Frequency Memory Editor requires the Windows .Net framework (2.0).
It can be installed from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d- 8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en The setup.exe and K3FreqMemoryEditor.msi files should be in the same directory. Setup.exe looks for it there. It appears that we currently require Windows Installer 3.1 or later. I'll see if I can influence that. Windows Installer 3.1 is an Windows 2000 and later product, Installer 2.0 is available for Windows 98 SE. Can you try installing Windows Installer 2.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=cebb acd8-c094-4255-b702-de3bb768148f I'll do some poking around to see if I can offer a Windows 98 SE version. I hope it is possible. Well, the .Net Framework is supposed to work on Windows 98 SE, so I can at
least give it a try, if the prerequisite software is installed and does the job. I'm still using Visual Studio 2005 (and not 2008 or 2010) for the Elecraft utilities because the newer compilers generate EXEs that don't run on Windows 98 SE or Windows ME. I'm aware that at least some of our community migrates older-but-working-fine systems into the radio shack... But I can't ignore the development productivity I get from using a modern runtime library, and I needed a grid control for this effort. The .Net framework's grid control is adequate and is free for customers. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: Joe Subich, W4TV [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2010 9:23 AM To: Elecraft Reflector; [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor with Win98SE Dick, > I'll do some poking around to see if I can offer a Windows 98 SE > version.
