Looking for any hints on tweaking the audio settings for the K3 with the Heil HC 5 mike element.
Rather than just grabbing numbers out of the air, I'd like to start with settings that have worked for you and go from there. 73 John ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
John,
Start with the TX audio equalizer set flat. That is all 8 bands set to zero. The HC5 already has the necessary equalization built in. If you want to use a full range element like the iC or the HC 6, try the following: 1 -16 2 -16 3 -12 4 -2 5 -2 6 +2 7 +4 8 +6 The Heil website has a paper on K3 audio. 73 de W6BK On Mar 28, 2012, at 6:31 AM, WB9JPH wrote: > Looking for any hints on tweaking the audio settings for the K3 with the Heil HC 5 mike element. > > Rather than just grabbing numbers out of the air, I'd like to start with settings that have worked for you and go from there. > > 73 > John > > > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
John, When I had the Proset with HC-5 element I used almost the same TX EQ as I currently use with the CM-400 - just a bit less preemphasis at the high end. The HC-5 settings were: 50 -16 100 -16 200 -6 400 0 800 0 1600 +3 2400 +5 3200 +6 Effectively, 65 db/octave roll off below 400 Hz to reduce the bass boost from having the mic close to the mouth and a 3 dB/octave boost above 800 Hz. With the CM-400 or other mics not designed with an "articulation peak" at 3 KHz I increase the pre-emphasis slope to 6 or 9 dB/octave (6dB/octave is usually sufficient unless the mic has a severe high frequency problem). 73, ... All-
Thanks for sharing. My newly acquired normal use headset is the HC5 proset and I was wondering what settings I should utilize. This is great information. My other headset the proset with HC4 I use once in awhile for other purposes. Thanks again, Keith Sent from my iPhone please excuse typos On Mar 28, 2012, at 9:35 AM, "Joe Subich, W4TV" <[hidden email]> wrote: > > John, > > When I had the Proset with HC-5 element I used almost the same TX EQ as > I currently use with the CM-400 - just a bit less preemphasis at the > high end. > > The HC-5 settings were: > > 50 -16 > 100 -16 > 200 -6 > 400 0 > 800 0 > 1600 +3 > 2400 +5 > 3200 +6 > > Effectively, 65 db/octave roll off below 400 Hz to reduce the bass > boost from having the mic close to the mouth and a 3 dB/octave boost > above 800 Hz. FWIW -- I've never found the need for ANY high frequency pre-emphasis with my CM500s (I own two), nor with any of those I've helped local hams tweak on the air, but I've seen anecdotal reports from a FEW hams who used them who DID need it. I thus suspect that there may be tolerance variations in the response of the mic capsules used. High frequency pre-emphasis (boosting the top two bands) IS required when professional mics are used with any ham rig. An important rule with ANY boost EQ should be done VERY carefully, and with careful listening to the result. The reason is that boost EQ can cause a gain stage to be driven into clip when it otherwise might not be. The settings I generally recommend for ANY mic with a K3 are maximum cut in the two lowest bands, something between 6dB cut and full cut in the third band (200 Hz), and everything else set to zero, then have someone listen critically with their receive IF set very wide. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
