K3/K144XV queries...

John Ragle
1. Even when NOT on 2 meters (K144XV off) my K3/100 seems to run hotter
than prior to installation, e.g. the fans run more frequently. Is this
general experience? ...and is it simply due to the changes in airflow
due to the presence of the  K144XV structure?

2. My K144XV puts out the quoted 10 watts. This seems to be its
saturation value, as increasing the drive from 1 mW to 1.5 mW does
nothing to increase the output. This is within specs, however, 10 watts
is not quite enough to drive my TE 1452G amp to full output (I get about
200 measured watts out at this drive level).

An obvious solution is to put another (!) amp between the K3 and the TE
as a post-preamp so to speak. This seems downright draconian. Dave
Anderson has suggested tweaking up the TE unit. Is there another way?
...as in slight mods to the K144XV?

Re: K3/K144XV queries...

I am not 100% certain on this, John, but I believe that with K144XV
firmware v1.02, some of its circuits are left switched on when the K3 is
switched to other bands. I think this was in an attempt to reduce drift.
The did not occur with the original v1.00 firmware.

Re: K3/K144XV queries...

John Ragle
David...

Thanks for the comment. I was unaware of this. There is a (barely)
detectable warmth to the side panel of my K3 with the rig set on a band
other than 2 (the rest of it, excepting the front panel, is cool), so
you could well be right.

I had hoped that one of the Elecraft Elves would comment on both of
my queries.

With regard to the power issue, I should have asked Santa for the
external xvtr with its higher output. I have found (by measuring) that
the TE 1452G is slightly peaked at the FM end of the band, though what
one would want with 350 watts in Repeaterville I have no idea.
Re-tweaking the TE looks to be the best solution to the drive problem.

Again, thanks for your response. Best transition to 2011...
