K3-K144XV

The problem you describe is in all probability due to a PA self oscillation. In my case it was about 153MHz and was very intermittent. A new internal transverter cured the problem. It required a spectrum plot to prove that was what was happening.

The problem with my transverter instability showed up as occasional drive to my 3cm transverter when selecting SSB, keying the rig, but not speaking. The transverter would occasionally go to full transmit output. It was rather disconcerting and I tended to blame the 3cm system first!

Also, if using the internal transverter with frequency locking, make sure you do the prescribed modification, if your K3 is more than 1 year old, or you may be one of the unlucky ones who experience small but noticeable frequency jumps every few seconds. The mod cures it completely. Up to then it marked the K3 out as my driver IF!
